Amanda Seyfried already won an Emmy for playing Elizabeth Holmes — now it looks like the actress might earn an Oscar nomination for playing the fallen tech titan, too. Not to mention playing herself.
Seyfried, who plays a pivotal role in You Can See Everything, has been steadily climbing up the Gold Derby leaderboards for Best Supporting Actress. As the documentary has been building buzz and notching box-office records, she’s been gathering more momentum in the Oscar race. She now stands at No. 6 in the category, up 13 percentage points in our combined odds and 25 percentage points among our experts. That’s just one spot removed from nomination territory.
The Top 5 includes two potential nominations for Penélope Cruz, who’s ranked for both The Invite and La Bola Negra. This is the first year the Academy has allowed an actor to receive multiple nominations in the same category for different performances.

No performer has yet received an acting Oscar nomination for appearing in a documentary, but Gold Derby has confirmed that Seyfried is eligible — and she looks poised to break that precedent. The Oscar nominations will be announced on Jan. 21.
Documentaries are not eligible for the Golden Globes, so Seyfried won’t be eligible there. The Actor Awards also exclude documentaries, though she could petition for an exception. It is likely, though, that she will get recognized by the Critics Choice Awards, given critical response to the film — it holds a 96% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

With A24 still trying to keep her role a surprise, Seyfried has yet to begin a formal awards campaign for her work in the film, though she did appear at the recent Academy Museum Gala, giving a few cryptic red-carpet interviews where she talked about her emus. And on a recent social media post of an interview where Timothy Simons raved about her performance, she commented, “TIMOTHY 😍😍.”
Co-directed by Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim, You Can See Everything chronicles Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes final weeks at home with her life partner, Billy Evans, and their two young children before heading to prison to serve her sentence for defrauding investors. Halfway through the doc, once he loses access to the now-imprisoned Holmes, Fielder recruits Seyfried to help reenact scenes as Holmes. But not only does Seyfriend channel Holmes again unerringly, the performer also engages with Evans in as herself — serving as a de facto stand-in for the audience. Critics have called it “remarkable” (Slate), “deft, haunting” (Vulture), and “her most compelling screen work ever” (Variety)
