Another Major Cable TV Company Bankruptcy, YouTube TV’s Big Upgrade, & More – The Top Cord Cutting Stories From The Past Week

Cord Cutting was busy this week with multiple major stories. YouTube TV drew particular attention for both immediate expansions in higher-resolution programming and longer-term plans that could improve video quality, even as hardware and operational constraints limit how quickly those advances reach living-room devices.

YouTube TV is moving toward support for the AV2 video codec, with an initial rollout targeted for the web version of YouTube as early as the first quarter of 2027. AV2 offers approximately 30 percent better compression efficiency than the preceding AV1 standard. As of March 2026, more than 90 percent of YouTube’s catalog by watch time was already available in AV1. The newer codec is expected to deliver either sharper pictures at existing bitrates or equivalent quality with less data usage, while also supporting improved HDR, higher frame rates, and multi-stream features. For YouTube TV, these efficiencies could eventually benefit 4K HDR sports broadcasts and multiview experiences that combine multiple feeds by reducing bandwidth demands and improving handling of fast motion. Implementation on television hardware faces substantial barriers, however. As of late 2026, commercial television chipsets and consumer streaming devices lack hardware decoding support for AV2. The codec’s computational demands are roughly five times greater than those of AV1 for software decoding, making dedicated silicon essential for efficient playback on power-constrained devices. Live television further complicates adoption because it requires real-time ingest and encoding capacity that on-demand video does not. Device fragmentation across platforms such as Roku, Amazon Fire TV, Apple TV, and various smart TVs, combined with long hardware replacement cycles, means broad availability on living-room screens is likely to trail the web experience by several years. Near-term testing and improvements are therefore expected to focus on browser-based viewing.

In a more immediate step, YouTube TV has added 4K feeds for the NBCSN channel. Subscribers who pay for the 4K Plus add-on can access ultra-high-definition versions of sports events that also appear on Peacock. These include Monday night NBA games, Major League Baseball regular-season and postseason contests, Premier League soccer, WNBA regular-season and playoff games, college football and basketball from conferences such as the Big Ten, Big East, and Big 12, golf majors including the U.S. Open and The Open Championship, cycling events such as the Tour de France, and related studio programming. Overflow channels NBCSN 2 and NBCSN 3 handle simultaneous events during high-volume periods. NBCSN itself relaunched as a 24/7 linear channel in November 2025, with YouTube TV serving as an early distributor. The 4K Plus option, which carries an additional monthly fee on top of the base plan, also unlocks higher-resolution streams from networks including NBC Sports, ESPN, Fox Sports, FX, Nat Geo, Discovery, Tastemade, and NBA TV. Viewers locate 4K content by searching for the quality designation, checking program information, or browsing network pages. Compatible 4K televisions or streaming devices and a broadband connection meeting recommended speeds—at least 25 Mbps for stable playback—are required. Not every program is produced in native 4K, and availability depends on production and rights. Standard-definition feeds remain available on base plans.

Traditional cable operators continue to confront severe financial pressure. Optimum Communications, the U.S. broadband and cable provider controlled by billionaire Patrick Drahi and previously known as Altice USA, is preparing for a Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing that could occur before the end of 2026. The company, the fifth-largest traditional cable TV provider in the United States, carries a debt burden of approximately $26 billion, with significant maturities approaching in 2027, including large amounts due in April of that year. Debt is concentrated at the CSC Holdings subsidiary, where funded obligations sit in the low $22 billion range and contribute to the higher consolidated total. Negotiations with creditors, including Apollo Global Management, Oaktree Capital Management, and JPMorgan Chase, are advancing toward a restructuring agreement that would transfer equity control of the company to the lenders and resolve ongoing litigation involving allegations of antitrust violations and improper asset transfers. Earlier in the year, Optimum undertook internal reorganization steps to insulate certain valuable assets, such as East cable operations and a stake in the Lightpath fiber business, by creating an unrestricted subsidiary. Creditors later challenged aspects of those moves. A successful restructuring under court supervision would reset the capital structure, leave the reorganized broadband business under creditor ownership, and address the maturity wall amid industry challenges that include cord-cutting, competition from fiber and wireless alternatives, and elevated leverage. Differences over the treatment of Drahi’s remaining equity interest have narrowed, improving prospects for an orderly process, though final timing and terms remain under discussion.

Local broadcast television is experiencing consolidation that reduces the number of independent station owners. The count of independent companies owning local ABC, CBS, Fox, and NBC stations has declined from more than 150 twenty years ago to roughly 62 today. Control is now concentrated among a few large corporations: Nexstar Media Group, Sinclair Broadcast Group, and Gray Television. The trend began with the 1996 Telecommunications Act, which reduced the number of owners by about 40 percent between 1996 and 2006, and continued through successive acquisitions. Mid-size groups such as Tribune Media, Raycom, and Media General were later absorbed by larger firms, pushing the independent count below 100 by 2016. Federal rule changes have accelerated the process further. In August 2026 the FCC eliminated the national audience-reach cap, previously set at 39 percent of households, and replaced it with case-by-case reviews. The agency also approved Nexstar’s acquisition of Tegna, resulting in Nexstar controlling more than 250 full-power stations and becoming the largest owner. Remaining independent affiliates, which produce local newscasts, employ staff, and sell advertising under network agreements, are expected to be acquired by Nexstar, Sinclair, or Gray. Supporters of consolidation contend that larger companies can better compete with streaming services for advertising revenue and sustain local news operations. Critics note accompanying effects such as shared newscasts, standardized segments, and fewer distinct local newsrooms, which reduce independent decision-making on local coverage.

Sports media is also adjusting through cost reductions at major networks. Longtime ESPN producers Mark Gross and Tim Corrigan are departing after accepting voluntary early-retirement offers from parent company Disney. The offers form part of a companywide program announced in August as a cost-reduction measure for eligible employees meeting tenure and role criteria, allowing them to leave under enhanced terms rather than face potential involuntary cuts. Gross joined ESPN in 1988 and has held significant production responsibilities across multiple sports, including oversight of NFL event and studio coverage, Major League Baseball, and other properties. In 2023, after a network restructuring, he assumed the lead role for NFL studio and event production and is scheduled to remain through the production of Super Bowl LXI. Corrigan has been with the company since 1987 and has long been central to basketball coverage. He served as lead producer for the NBA Finals for several years before shifting in 2025 to oversee the network’s full NBA and WNBA operations and is expected to stay through the conclusion of the 2026-27 season. These exits continue a pattern of workforce reductions at ESPN and Disney this year, including departures of well-known on-air personalities and an earlier round of layoffs affecting roughly 300 employees across the company. Broader restructuring within Disney’s television operations is anticipated to continue into the following year. The long tenures of both producers mean the network is losing substantial institutional knowledge in the production of flagship NFL and NBA coverage, though the voluntary nature of the packages allows for an orderly transition while they complete major events within their current responsibilities.

Collectively, the week’s developments illustrate an industry in which streaming platforms invest in higher-quality video delivery and expanded sports options while traditional cable operators confront debt burdens that can lead to bankruptcy and ownership changes, local stations consolidate under fewer owners, and sports networks streamline production ranks. The pattern reflects ongoing viewer migration toward digital services that offer greater flexibility and improving technical capabilities, even as those services face their own hardware and rights constraints, and as legacy operators and broadcasters adapt through restructuring and scale.
