Dancing With the Stars Season 35 recap: Horror Movie Night

Dancing With the Stars made us cry last week on “Dedication Night.” Now “Horror Movie Night” will make us scream just in time for Halloween.

Tuesday night, the routines will pay tribute to frightful films including Black Swan, Sinners, and The Omen, while the celebs cower in fear of guest judge Shirley Ballas (Dancing With the Stars: The Next Pro).

Host Alfonso Ribeiro surprised the top 10 couples at the end of “Dedication Night” by not eliminating anyone, so those judges’ scores and viewer votes will be combined with tonight’s totals to determine the results.

That’s good news for figure skater Amber Glenn, who topped the leaderboard last week, while the four celebs who tied for the lowest score — actress Tatyana Ali, Bachelorette alum Tyler Cameron, Jackson Olson of the Savannah Bananas baseball team, and comedian Connor Wood — have some catching up to do. The most recent elimination of Jimmy Kimmel Live! sidekick Guillermo Rodriguez demonstrated that even a fan favorite can fall by the wayside due to low scores.

Read on for our Dancing With the Stars recap to find out who slays the competition, and who, if anyone, is eliminated.

Julia Stiles and Ezra Sosa

Julia Stiles and pro partner Ezra Sosa

Performance: Argentine Tango to “The Dogs Attack” by Jerry Goldsmith, Lionel Newman and National Philharmonic Orchestra, inspired by The Omen
Carrie Ann’s comments: The dance was “tense” and “stiff,” needed more looseness.
Derek’s comments: “The music felt big and huge,” but the dance felt “timid.”
Shirley’s comments: There wasn’t enough tracing on the floor, and the movements were too slow.
Bruno’s comments: “I didn’t know you could do that with a priest! Talk about the mistress of seduction!”
Scores: Carrie Ann (7), Derek (7), Shirley (4), Bruno (8) = 26 out of 40

Harry Shum Jr. and Jenna Johnson

Harry Shum Jr. and pro partner Jenna Johnson

Performance: Contemporary to “Toxic” by 2WEI, inspired by Saw
Carrie Ann’s comments: “That was a contemporary we’ve been waiting for.”
Derek’s comments: “The core strength was insane.” “You’re a fantastic actor,” with “fantastic” choreography.
Shirley’s comments: “I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything quite like that.” “I thought you were sincere in your performance.”
Bruno’s comments: “I could literally taste the fear. It was like being trapped in a nightmare.” The “interpretation” was “perfection.”
Scores: Carrie Ann (10), Derek (10), Shirley (10), Bruno (10) = 40 out of 40

Jan Ravnik and Tatyana Ali

Tatyana Ali and pro partner Jan Ravnik

Performance: Paso Doble to “I Lied to You” by Miles Caton, inspired by Sinners
Carrie Ann’s comments: “That was your more powerful and most passionate dance yet.” However, “the skirt slightly overpowered you at times.”
Derek’s comments: “Your performance quality is absolutely riveting.” The face was a “10,” but she loses some energy in the body.
Shirley’s comments: “It was a theatrical paso doble, but for me it had no recognizable paso doble.” Not enough “flamenco style.”
Bruno’s comments: “I felt the beast within coming out.” But “some passes were messy.” “Don’t lose the intention because the intention was good.”
Scores: Carrie Ann (8), Derek (8), Shirley (4), Bruno (8) = 28 out of 40

Valentin Chmerkovskiy and Jenna Dewan

Jenna Dewan and pro partner Val Chmerkovskiy

Performance: Argentine Tango to “Uninvited” by Damned Anthem and Kendra Dantes, inspired by 21 Weeks Later and Zombie movies
Carrie Ann’s comments: “Incredible choreography,” the movement had “fine-toothed precision.” It was “perfection” apart from the stumble.
Derek’s comments: “That was one of the best Argentine tangos I’ve ever seen on this floor. The leg control was insane.” “That choreography was sensational.”
Shirley’s comments: “I love to see twisting in the upper half and the lower half of the body.” “There was a little hiccup over here,” but “you kept going.”
Bruno’s comments: “Power, passion, fatal attraction.” “Apart from that little incident we all saw,” it was “brilliant” with “lyricism through it.”
Scores: Carrie Ann (9), Derek (10), Shirley (9), Bruno (9) = 37 out of 40

Connor Wood and Rylee Arnold

Connor Wood and pro partner Rylee Arnold

Performance: Contemporary to “You Are My Sunshine” by Charles McDonald, inspired by Annabelle: Creation
Carrie Ann’s comments: “Connor, I crown you the contemporary king. You disappeared into that dance. You made everything look so easy.”
Derek’s comments: “That was unbelievable.” “Perfect production, perfect music.”
Shirley’s comments: “Choreography was outstanding.” “Your musicality, your narrative” was “great.”
Bruno’s comments: “You killed the routine. The dramatic structure, the choreography … It was like watching a mini movie.”
Scores: Carrie Ann (10), Derek (10), Shirley (8), Bruno (9) = 37 out of 40

Daniella Karagach and Ezra Frech

Ezra Frech and pro partner Daniella Karagach

Performance: Jazz to “Madness” by Ruelle, inspired by The Invisible Man
Carrie Ann’s comments: “I couldn’t tell you were injured at all,” but “work on your focus and your acting.”
Derek’s comments: “You are so captivating to watch,” but the storytelling missed.
Shirley’s comments: “Jazz is subjective,” but “I got your storyline.” “All in all, I liked the performance.”
Bruno’s comments: “You were like a shape-shifting fiend.” “You did a great interpretation.”
Scores: Carrie Ann (8), Derek (9), Shirley (9), Bruno (9) = 35 out of 40

Jackson Olson and Emma Slater

Jackson Olson and pro partner Emma Slater

Performance: Contemporary to “That’s Life” by Frank Sinatra, inspired by Joker
Carrie Ann’s comments: “It was kind of weird, but in a good way.” He didn’t finish his movements, but it was a good deliberate choice.
Derek’s comments: “You committed to that role so amazingly.” Some of the transitions out of lifts were “clunky.”
Shirley’s comments: “It could be a little more sure-footed for me” in the lifts, but it was “terrifying.”
Bruno’s comments: “You seem to thrive in madness, mayhem, chaos,” with a “delicious,” “Looney Tunes sense of humor.”
Scores: Carrie Ann (9), Derek (9), Shirley (8), Bruno (9) = 35 out of 40

Tyler Cameron and Sharna Burgess

Tyler Cameron and pro partner Sharna Burgess

Performance: Viennese Waltz to “Love Song for a Vampire” by Annie Lennox, inspired by Bram Stoker’s Dracula
Carrie Ann’s comments: He danced “smaller” to try to dance with Sharna, and the acting wasn’t great.
Derek’s comments: “So smooth,” but the frame was “hunched” when it “has to be wide”
Shirley’s comments: “Your acting skills were great.” “The postural part, the bottom was out” and wasn’t on a “vertical line.”
Bruno’s comments: “Don’t lean in when you lead, let her do her arch,” but “I loved the performance.”
Scores: Carrie Ann (7), Derek (7), Shirley (5), Bruno (7) = 26 out of 40

Pasha Pashkov and Amber Glenn

Amber Glenn and pro partner Pasha Pashkov

Performance: Argentine Tango to “Perfection” by Clint Mansell, inspired by Black Swan
Carrie Ann’s comments: “I love the subject matter that you keep tackling,” but she seemed to still in her shoulders.
Derek’s comments: “Beautiful dance. I loved the dance.”
Shirley’s comments: “I thought the clarity of the embrace … the usage of the floor, you’re so graceful in everything you do.”
Bruno’s comments: “I have to praise you because I’ve done this piece and to follow the musical phrasing is so difficult … and you did it so beautifully.”
Scores: Carrie Ann (9), Derek (9), Shirley (9), Bruno (9) = 36 out of 40

Maura Higgins and Mark Ballas

Maura Higgins and pro partner Mark Ballas

Carrie Ann’s comments: “The way you make everything so alluring and beautiful … I can’t remember my note!”
Derek’s comments: “You’ve gotta point those bad boys” when looking at her bare feet.
Shirley’s comments: “It was powerful, I thought your arms were getting quite better.”
Bruno’s comments: “You have a fantastic, lyrical quality,” but “now you have to learn to get everything from the ground and through the body.”
