Streaming May Never Be As Profitable As Cable TV Was & Raising Prices to Chase Cable TV Profit Will Destroy Streaming Services

A decade after traditional cable networks helped power robust cash generation at NBCUniversal, the company’s streaming successor Peacock is delivering only a fraction of that financial contribution. In the third quarter of 2016, NBCUniversal’s traditional cable TV networks produced $893 million in operating cash flow. In the third quarter of 2026, Peacock generated $261 million in adjusted EBITDA, Comcast’s current metric for operating cash flow. That figure represents a drop of roughly 71 percent from the 2016 level, leaving Peacock’s quarterly result at less than one-third of what the legacy cable networks generated at their peak. This comes as Comcast is planning for massive layoffs and spinning NBCUniversal off into its own company.

The comparison highlights a structural shift in the media business. Cable networks once benefited from the economics of the bundled pay-TV package, in which carriage fees from distributors and advertising revenue flowed to a relatively stable base of channels. Streaming operates under different conditions. Services compete for individual subscribers, invest heavily in original programming and sports rights, and face ongoing pressure to keep prices competitive in a crowded market. Peacock has made measurable progress on this front. After years of significant losses, the service posted its second consecutive profitable quarter in the third quarter of 2026. Revenue reached $1.8 billion, and paid subscribers stood at 48 million. Those gains reflect subscriber growth, advertising around major events such as the latter stages of the FIFA World Cup, and earlier price adjustments. Still, the absolute cash generation remains far below the levels once produced by the traditional cable portfolio.

The gap between what cable TV companies had 10 to 20 years ago may prove difficult to close. Streaming lacks the structural advantages of the old bundle, including guaranteed distribution across large pay-TV footprints and the ability to spread content costs across a captive audience. Limited competition vs. what is out there now. Content spending remains high to attract and retain viewers, while advertising revenue is more variable and subject to competition from pure-play digital platforms. At the same time, legacy cable and broadband businesses continue to face subscriber erosion as consumers shift viewing habits.

Companies that once relied on cable television are now accelerating efforts to improve the profitability of their streaming services. That push includes price increases, tighter packaging of content, and greater emphasis on advertising-supported tiers. While these steps can improve near-term margins, they also carry the risk of driving away price-sensitive subscribers who already have numerous lower-cost or free alternatives. When looking at the long game increasingly cheaper or free services from places like Roku are seeing strong growth as others who are driving up prices are struggling. Recent results across the industry show that streaming subscriber growth has slowed for many services, and further price hikes could accelerate churn. For Comcast and peers navigating the same transition, the challenge is to raise the financial contribution of streaming without undermining the audience scale needed to support it. Peacock’s recent profitability marks a turning point after years of investment, yet the scale of cash generation remains well short of the traditional cable era. Whether streaming can ever approach those earlier peaks remains an open question as the industry continues to adjust its model.
