Disney Has Shut Down Over 100 Cable TV Channels

Disney has shuttered roughly 130 international cable television channels over the past decade, with the bulk of those closures concentrated in a compressed period spanning 2020 and 2021 as the company accelerated its shift away from traditional linear distribution. In 2020 alone, the company eliminated 30 foreign networks. The following May, then-CEO Bob Chapek disclosed plans to close an additional 100 international channels by the end of 2021, framing the moves as part of a deliberate effort to redirect audiences and content toward Disney+ and the Star brand that accompanied the service in many markets outside the United States. The strategy treated linear channels as legacy distribution vehicles whose programming would largely migrate to streaming, thereby supporting subscriber growth in regions where Disney+ was still expanding.

The closures affected more than 20 countries and encompassed regional versions of Disney Channel, Disney Junior, Disney XD, and various Fox-branded networks acquired in the 2019 purchase of 21st Century Fox assets. Major markets that lost linear Disney services included the United Kingdom, where the core kids channels ended in late 2020, along with Australia and New Zealand, which saw earlier exits. In Southeast Asia and Hong Kong, Disney eliminated 18 channels in 2021, among them Fox, FX, multiple sports services, and local Disney Channel and Junior feeds, while retaining a smaller set of Chinese-language and National Geographic properties. Similar rationalizations occurred in Russia and other territories. Contractual obligations with local distributors influenced the precise timing in individual markets, yet the overall direction remained consistent: reduce reliance on traditional cable and satellite carriage in favor of direct-to-consumer platforms.

Domestic U.S. networks were largely spared from that particular wave. Core Disney Channel, Disney Junior, Disney XD, Freeform, FX, and National Geographic services continued operating within American cable packages, reflecting stronger residual carriage fees, higher advertising rates relative to many international markets, and the more gradual pace of cord-cutting at the time. Linear operations still generated substantial cash flow even as streaming investment mounted.

More recently, under CEO Josh D’Amaro, who assumed the role in March 2026, Disney has restructured leadership over its remaining television operations in ways that industry observers widely interpret as preparation for further contraction of U.S. linear assets. Debra O’Connell, chairman of Disney Entertainment Television, is directing an overhaul that consolidates previously separate units—including ABC Entertainment, 20th Television, Hulu Originals, Freeform, Disney Kids & Family, and National Geographic Content—into a more centralized structure organized around streaming audience needs rather than legacy channel brands. The effort, which senior executives have indicated may not be fully finalized until late 2026, is expected to involve hundreds of layoffs and a reduced emphasis on independent development pipelines tied to individual linear networks. Parallel changes elevated Adam Smith to sole chairman of the direct-to-consumer business, while shifting other executives into franchise and content strategy roles that sit under the television organization, underscoring the priority of streaming scale over traditional network silos.

These leadership adjustments occur against a backdrop of continued subscriber and revenue pressure on cable. Linear networks remain profitable for Disney, yet their contribution has steadily declined relative to streaming, and peers across the industry have already closed or combined channels. Many analysts and former executives anticipate that the reorganization will eventually result in the shutdown or significant scaling back of some U.S. cable channels, particularly those with more limited audiences or higher operating costs, once remaining distribution agreements allow. The international precedent from 2020–2021 demonstrates both the company’s willingness to exit linear entirely in selected markets and the practical constraints that slow such exits. With streaming now the clear organizational center of gravity and new leadership explicitly tasked with aligning television resources around it, the longstanding U.S. exception appears increasingly provisional.
