The Gentlemen might be coming back for a third season, but one of the show’s original stars apparently will not be returning for season 3.
In a surprise turn of events, Daniel Ings has announced that he will not be returning for The Gentlemen season 3, exiting the series after two seasons. Ings casually broke the news in a new interview with HATC Magazine, confirming that he is not coming back for season 3, which is currently in production.
“I’m not in the next one. So that’s a fun sense of closure. I kind of see it as closure for the character in a way; it just ends as this wild, broken, crazy, you know. I don’t know, probably mumbling into the ether somewhere in the British countryside.”
Interestingly, Ings did not specify why he will not be returning for The Gentlemen season 3, and the show did not hint at his departure in season 2. What seems to be the likely reason for his departure is Ings’ busy schedule, as the actor has been highly sought after with several projects currently in various stages of development, including high-profile projects such as Star Wars: Starfighter.
We’re going to have to see how Ings’ character, Freddy Horniman, is written out of the series and whether the writing team decides to leave the door open for Freddy to return in future seasons or takes a more permanent approach to writing the character out.
Season 2 saw Freddy appear in a lessened role, but the ending suggested that Freddy would be back for season 3. The finale ended with Eddie confronting his brother for his betrayal and then forcing him into a van to kill his co-conspirator, which Freddy did, with the season ending with Freddy severing Dixon’s head with a chainsaw. Could it be that Eddie decides to kill his brother after or simply sends him away? We’re going to have to wait until season 3 arrives, but knowing that Ings won’t be back certainly raises a lot of questions about where the writers will take the story next.
While Ings won’t be back, we imagine they’ll try to leave the door open for him to return, but with a show like The Gentlemen, there is really no telling what they might do. Every time we think we know where the show is going, it throws some new curveball our way, so there is no way of knowing what they might have planned for Freddy.
We’ll certainly miss Ings in season 3, but we’re excited to see what season 3 holds and to see who might be joining the cast for season 3. Little is known about the third season, including who will be back, with only series leads Theo James and Kaya Scodelario confirmed to return.
The Gentlemen is streaming now on Netflix.
