YouTube is Developing An Experimental Social Media Platform Called Tamba

YouTube appears to be quietly constructing a new social media experience under the name Tamba, according to code and design assets uncovered in the latest Android version of its main app. An analysis of YouTube version 21.44.534 by Android Authority revealed references to a separate application package named com.google.android.youtube.sandbox that carries Tamba branding. The main YouTube app treats this package as a distinct product, complete with its own search suggestion handling and file providers. Dedicated client identifiers for both Android and iOS versions suggest Google is preparing the project for multiple platforms rather than limiting it to a single operating system.

The visual identity already taking shape differs noticeably from the standard YouTube look. Assets include a logo that places the word Tamba in a bold typeface beside a loose, squiggly scribble containing a play-button cutout. A related experimental icon uses the same scribble-and-play motif on its own and could serve as the app icon. In total, the teardown surfaced 38 custom icons rendered in a playful, hand-drawn style. These cover navigation elements such as home, search, create, camera, inbox, chat, stickers, and a microphone, along with a person icon paired with a plus sign. Additional icon references point to a crown, a lock, a locked bookmark, and a game controller, reinforcing the impression of a fuller social interface rather than a simple video player.

Functionality strings indicate a broad set of social tools. Users would be able to follow one another, send and approve follow requests, and maintain private profiles—features that currently have limited or no equivalents on the main YouTube platform. Direct messaging appears in both one-on-one and group forms, with support for exchanging photos and videos. Posts can receive heart reactions, and replies can take the form of text, voice notes, or even YouTube Shorts. Shorts themselves seem designed to play back inside chats and from a bottom navigation bar. Notification types cover new followers, approved follow requests, message requests, group-chat additions, hearts on posts, and various comment or reply events. Dedicated onboarding and activity pages further imply that Tamba is intended to stand as its own experience for new users.

Internally the effort is labeled Project Sandbox, a designation that typically signals an experimental testing ground rather than a finished product ready for wide release. Several icons are explicitly tagged as experimental, and the presence of pre-onboarding follower notifications suggests the social graph could begin forming even before a user completes signup. Android Authority notes that this is not merely an internal test build, because YouTube already maintains a separate package for that purpose; the sandbox code includes unique branding, onboarding flows, and platform-specific client IDs.

The discovery arrives against a backdrop of YouTube gradually expanding its social tools. Direct messaging returned to the platform earlier in 2026 on an invitation-only basis for users aged 18 and older after a multi-year absence. Group-chat features have also been in development. Tamba could represent either a standalone social app that leverages YouTube’s existing video library and Shorts ecosystem or a controlled environment in which Google tests deeper social interactions before folding them into the primary service. The name itself may prove temporary, and nothing in the code confirms a public launch timeline or final feature set.

Whether Tamba eventually ships as its own destination or dissolves into the main YouTube app, the volume of finished-looking assets and social logic already present indicates that Google is actively exploring a more Instagram-like social layer built around its video platform. The findings originated in Android Authority’s APK teardown published on November 3, 2026. No official confirmation or denial has come from YouTube or Google.
