Roku is notifying customers that a popular feature, the fish tank screensaver, is being removed at the beginning of next month.
Some Roku users have shared that when their screensaver comes on, they’re receiving this on-screen notification: Starting Dec. 1, 2026, the Aquatic Life screensaver will no longer be available, and your screensaver will switch to Roku City. Roku City was introduced in 2017. The company described it as an “entertainment utopia,” where Roku users could see sites from city buildings to volcanoes, alongside movie references and easter eggs for upcoming content.
Over time, Roku City became an advertising opportunity and a way to connect with Roku users through interactive features and events.
In April 2026, Roku launched Roku City Dash, an original game that takes you inside the beloved Roku City, past iconic buildings and unexpected surprises from outer space.
Users were also invited to “Live from Roku City” events, which turned the iconic screensaver into a digital stage for original performances. The event started with a Demi Lovato performance, got a Wicked: For Good” takeover for a New Year’s celebration, and saw a country music takeover from Luke Bryan for his new album in September.
Since launching nearly 10 years ago, users have also spotted advertisements in Roku City, from a Barbie billboard to the McDonalds golden arches standing out against the purple background.
While Roku will likely continue to encourage users to embrace the Roku City screensaver, there are still several other options available that aren’t showing the same discontinuation message, including the Jungle Screensaver, Nautical Screensaver, Star Trek: The Original Series, and lots of holiday-themed options.
