You Can See Everything mania has taken over every aspect of entertainment, from box-office sales to social media spoofs — even Halloween costumes. Now, it’s taking over Gold Derby’s Oscar predictions.
Two weeks after the meta documentary climbed into the Top 10 in our Best Picture nomination predictions, it has now cracked the Top 5 for Best Director. The filmmaking tandem of Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim has bypassed Denis Villeneuve, whose film Dune: Part Three is still a month and a half away from opening.
According to our Oscar experts from leading media outlets, Fielder and Oppenheim now have a 48% chance of receiving a nomination, up 22 percentage points from the same time last week. It would be the first Oscar nominations for both filmmakers; they’re also eligible as producers in the Best Picture field.

3.

Martin McDonagh
Wild Horse Nine
4.

5.

Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim
You Can See Everything
6.

Denis Villeneuve
Dune: Part Three
The four contenders above them in our Best Director predictions are Christopher Nolan for The Odyssey with a 100% chance, Javier Ambrossi and Javier Calvo, aka Los Javis, for La Bola Negra at 96%, Martin McDonagh for Wild Horse Nine at 92%, and Olivia Wilde for The Invite at 60%.
If the Fielder-Oppenheim duo and Los Javis team get in, it would be the first time in Oscar history two directing duos were nominated in the same year. Prior nominated teams include Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert; Joel and Ethan Coen; Warren Beatty and Buck Henry; and Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins.
Fielder and Oppenheim could also notch another milestone by becoming the first for directing a documentary. You Can See Everything follows Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes in the days leading up to her imprisonment for wire fraud for deceiving investors.
In Gold Derby’s overall odds, which include the selections of experts, editors, and users, Fielder and Oppenheim are less than 1 percentage point behind Villeneueve for the final Best Director slot. The lineup is the same with this group of predictors, with Nolan, Los Javis, McDonagh, and Wilde in the top four positions.
The 2027 Oscars nominations will be announced on Jan. 21 — see the awards calendar.
