Two Big Tech antiheroes and one hand-crafted gem are making big moves on Gold Derby’s Best Picture leaderboard.
You Can See Everything, Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim’s fly-on-the-wall meta documentary about Elizabeth Holmes, saw its chances of scoring a historic Oscar nomination rise dramatically over the weekend as the film expanded into wide release. While still locked into the No. 8 position, You Can See Everything saw the largest gains over the past five days, surging 34 percentage points; it now has a better than 61% chance at becoming the first documentary to earn a Best Picture nod. Distributor A24 has its sights set on even more.
Only two other films saw their odds improve over the weekend. First up, Luca Guadagnino‘s Artificial, a dramatization of the founding of OpenAI starring Andrew Garfield as Sam Altman, continues to ride positive buzz as it encroaches on the Top 10. Artificial inched up 2 percentage points and now has a better than 33% at a nomination, closing the gap on its nearest competition, the Cannes Palme d’Or-winning Fjord, whose odds tumbled 14 points over the past five days to 35.3%. Artificial arrives in limited release on Dec. 25.
Finally, following glowing debuts (including a 100% on Rotten Tomatoes) and a better-than-expected debut in theaters, Laika’s Wildwood has improved its long-shot adds at Best Picture. The stop-motion fantasy epic, about a girl and her classmate searching an enchanted forest for her abducted brother, climbed 2 points, leapfrogging Possible Love and Fatherland and entering the Top 20. Wildwood now has just under a 4% chance at securing a Best Picture bid to go with its 98% chance at giving Laika its sixth consecutive Best Animated Feature nomination.
The Odyssey remains the leader in the clubhouse with a nearly 96% shot at landing a Best Picture nod, followed by La Bola Negra, Wild Horse Nine, The Debut, Project Hail Mary, Dune: Part Three, and The Invite.
