As streaming services steadily raise prices, scatter libraries across competing platforms, quietly pull titles, and insert unavoidable ads, many households are returning to the certainty of owning physical DVDs and Blu-rays. Sony has met that renewed demand with the BDP-S1700U, a compact and affordable disc player priced at just $113. Clad in a clean black finish, it plays Blu-ray discs at native Full HD 1080p while intelligently upscaling ordinary DVDs toward high-definition clarity, giving older collections a noticeable visual upgrade.
Available now on Amazon HERE, the BDP-S1700U stands out as an excellent, no-frills option for anyone who wants to enjoy their physical media library without depending on internet-connected streaming platforms.

Advanced Upscaling Brings Old DVDs Back to Life
The standout feature of the Sony BDP-S1700U is its DVD upscaling technology, powered by Sony’s Super Scaler (Precision CinemaHD). Standard DVDs, native at 480p resolution, are upconverted via HDMI output to near-1080p quality. This process sharpens details, reduces softness, and enhances color vibrancy through Sony’s TRILUMINOS color technology.
Classic films, TV shows, and family videos from their DVD libraries can look noticeably better on modern HDTVs and 4K displays with the upscalling this player offers. The upscaling doesn’t magically turn DVDs into true 4K, but it significantly improves clarity, contrast, and overall picture quality compared to playing them directly on a high-definition TV without assistance.
The player also excels with Blu-ray Discs, delivering crisp Full HD 1080p video and rich, immersive audio via support for Dolby Digital TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio. Quick boot times and a simple, intuitive interface make it easy for the whole family to use, while the compact design fits neatly into any entertainment center.
Why Physical Media and This Player Make Sense Now
Streaming fatigue is real. Fragmented libraries across multiple services, sudden content removals, rising subscription costs, and the need for constant high-speed internet have pushed many consumers back toward owning their media. With the Sony BDP-S1700U, your DVDs and Blu-rays remain yours forever—no monthly fees, no ads, no region or licensing issues that can change overnight, and full offline playback capability.
This player is especially appealing for:

- Cinephiles maintaining curated physical collections
- Households in areas with unreliable or expensive internet
- Anyone seeking better picture quality from existing discs without buying new 4K versions
It includes practical extras like USB playback support, Ethernet for firmware updates, and compatibility with a wide range of disc formats. Many bundles even include the HDMI cable needed for instant setup.
