YouTube has plans t make it easier for users to identify AI-generated content. The platform is meeting user requests for more transparency by rolling out labels to make it clear when a song was made with generative AI.
Here’s how it works, according to a YouTube blog post. When a song was created primarily through generative AI, for things like composition and vocals, YouTube will put a label on the player page. When a user taps that label, they can get more information about the song, with a “How this content was made” section.
There are three scenarios for when content will be labeled as AI-generated music. First, music partners can manually disclose that AI was used in the creation of the song. In these cases, YouTube can add the label in addition to the creator disclosing to audiences. YouTube will also use its own AI tools to find AI-generated music and label it. And when content “contains valid Content Credentials data indicating the entire video is made with AI” it will also be labeled.
YouTube is the latest platform to take steps toward being transparent with users about AI-generated content, as the demand from audiences grows. In August, Apple Music announced that it will add “Made With AI” labels this year. Spotify has also pledged to label artists as “AI Personas” when their catalog appears to be AI-generated.
