Talk about All of a Sudden. After spending months hovering outside of the Top 5 contenders for Best Supporting Actress at the 2027 Oscars, Tao Okamoto is now firmly part of the conversation for her role in Ryusuke Hamaguchi‘s acclaimed drama.
The Japanese actress has recently seen a 17% jump in her odds among Gold Derby’s expert prognosticators, landing her at No. 4 in between two Penelope Cruz performances — The Invite at No. 3 and La Bola Negra at No. 5 — and behind The Odyssey duo of Anne Hathaway and Samantha Morton at No. 1 and No. 2, respectively.

That decisive rise can be credited, in part, to All of a Sudden‘s recent tour through three out of the four big fall festivals, playing Telluride, Toronto, and New York after premiering at Cannes over the summer. Okamoto shared that festival’s Best Actress prize with her co-star, Virginie Efira, who is already among the contenders eyeing a Top 5 finish in the race for a Best Actress Oscar nod.
Okamoto also holds down the No. 4 spot in the Golden Globes race for Best Film Supporting Actress, joining a group that once again includes Morton (No. 1), Hathaway (No. 2), and Cruz for The Invite (No. 5), along with newcomer Olivia Colman for Elsinore at No. 3. Strategists close to the Globes have told Gold Derby to expect international actors to be well-represented in the nominations, and both Okamoto and Efira — who ranks third among Best Film Drama Actress contenders — reflect that prediction.

Clocking in at a weighty, but wholly involving 197-minute runtime, All of a Sudden casts Efira as the director of a Parisian nursing home, and Okamoto as a visiting theater director who has recently been diagnosed with terminal cancer. The two strike up a deep friendship that transcends any cultural or language barriers, and heals some of the empty places inside themselves.
All of a Sudden has a few more festival playdates before arriving in theaters on Nov. 25. Hamaguchi’s breakthrough 2021 film, Drive My Car, drove its way into Oscar contention in multiple categories, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay, and took home the statuette for Best International Feature.
All of a Sudden could repeat in the category as Japan’s official submission for the 2027 ceremony, and if Efira and Okamoto claim Best Actress and Best Supporting Actrss nods, they’ll be the first actors that Hamaguchi has successfully steered into the Oscar race.
