ESPN Unlimited & ESPN Select Formerly ESPN+ Are Getting More Expensive

ESPN Unlimited is set to implement its first price increase since launching its direct-to-subscriber platform more than a year ago, with the changes taking effect on September 17. The flagship ESPN Unlimited monthly subscription will rise from the current $30 rate to $32, while the annual option will climb from $300 to $320, as spotted by Sports Media Watch.

At the same time, the more affordable ESPN Select plan, which functions largely as the equivalent of the longstanding ESPN+ service, will see its monthly cost move from $13 to $14 and its yearly fee increase from $130 to $140. These adjustments mark the initial upward revision for the standalone offerings introduced as part of ESPN’s broader push into direct-to-consumer distribution.

The majority of ESPN Unlimited users currently access the service through bundled packages that combine it with Disney+ and Hulu. That particular trio remains priced at $36 per month for the ad-supported version, or $45 for the ad-free tier. In contrast, the lower-tier bundle pairing Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN Select will increase from $20 to $22 monthly in its standard form and from $30 to $33 when including ad-free Disney+ and Hulu. No adjustments have been detailed for other discounted pairings that link ESPN Unlimited with external services such as Fox One or NFL+ Premium.

The timing of these changes aligns with similar moves across the streaming sports landscape. Peacock recently raised prices across its three tiers, including an increase for its standard Premium plan from $11 to $13 per month. Broader virtual multichannel video programming distributors have followed a consistent pattern of gradual escalation; YouTube TV, for instance, launched at $35 monthly in 2018 and now exceeds $80.

ESPN’s direct-to-consumer initiative remains in its formative phase according to internal communications marking the anniversary of the platform’s debut. Company leadership has characterized the effort as still occupying the early stages of a longer-term transition away from traditional distribution models. The price adjustments arrive as the service continues to expand its content offerings and refine its positioning in a competitive market dominated by both legacy sports networks and newer streaming entrants.

For subscribers who rely on the standalone Unlimited or Select plans, the September increases will represent a modest but immediate rise in monthly outlays. Those already enrolled in the primary Disney+ and Hulu combination will experience no change to their overall bill for the full ESPN Unlimited package. Annual subscribers locking in rates before the effective date can still secure the current lower pricing for a full year.

The moves reflect the economic realities facing sports media companies as they invest heavily in exclusive live programming, original content, and technological infrastructure while navigating shifting viewer habits and the decline of traditional cable packages. ESPN’s decision to raise rates after just over a year of operation underscores both the value it places on its expanded direct offerings and the ongoing pressure to generate sustainable revenue streams in the streaming era.

ESPN Unlimited and Select continue to serve as key components of the company’s strategy to reach audiences who have cut the cord or never subscribed to traditional pay television. With the first price revision now confirmed, attention will turn to how the adjustments affect acquisition and retention metrics in the coming months and whether further refinements to packaging or pricing follow as the direct-to-consumer business matures.
