The Spider-Man Movies In Order & Where To Stream Them

Spider-Man: Brand New Day broke the record for the biggest-ever opening at the U.S. box office. The film’s $360M debut bested that of Avengers: Endgame. It’s quite an accomplishment for a franchise that’s been around for a quarter century through nine films and three separate male leads.

For a sense of that lineage, we’ve compiled a chronological list of all Sony’s live-action films that star Spider-Man.

Scroll through the entries below for details on each live-action installment, who played Spider-Man, how much it made at the box office and where to stream it.

  • ‘Spider-Man,’ 2002

Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst launched Sony’s venerable franchise with their iconic kiss in 2002. The film was a superhero success long before the MCU even existed. Spider-Man finaled out at over $800M worldwide, proving Peter Parker had a very bright future.

Where to Stream It: Netflix, Hulu & Disney+

  • ‘Spider-Man 2,’ 2004

If 2002’s Spider-Man proved there was interest in Peter Parker, Spider-Man 2 proved — to risk an arachnid pun — that the webslinger had legs. While the sequel’s box office receipts came in just below those of the first film, they were more than enough to convince Sony it had a franchise on its hands.

The filmmakers upped the stakes by adding dueling love triangles and a new villain in the guise of the formidable Doc Oc, even as the specter of the Green Goblin hovered menacingly in the background.

  • ‘Spider-Man 3,’ 2007

Sony went all-out for this third installment starring Tobey Maguire, with Deadline reporting at the time it was one of the most expensive films ever made. It didn’t matter. The film opened well in a competitive summer and went on to gross close to $900M worldwide, well beyond its predecessors.

Once again, the film upped the stakes for Peter Parker, who faced not just challenges and misunderstandings with Kirsten Dunst’s Mary Jane, but Harry Osborn (James Franco) taking up his father’s Green Goblin mantle, the Sandman (Thomas Haden Church), Venom (Topher Grace) and an extraterrestrial symbiote.

Where to Stream It: Netflix, Hulu & Disney+

  • ‘The Amazing Spider-Man,’ 2012

A decade after Tobey Maguire’s debut, Sony decided to reboot the franchise with Andrew Garfield. The Amazing Spider-Man — the first of the series released in 3D — opened to just under $500M worldwide and finaled out at just under $800M. That’s comparable with the Tobey Maguire films; a very good sign for the decision to reboot.

In the film, Rhys Ifans’ Lizard was the big bad guy. Martin Sheen played Uncle Ben and Sally Field portrayed Aunt May. Denis Leary also appeared as Captain Stacy, father to Emma Stone’s Gwen Stacy.

  • ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2,’ 2014

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 depicts Peter’s quest to protect Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone), resulting in battles with the electricity-manipulating Electro (Jamie Foxx) and a vengeful Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan).

The 3D film ended up at $708.98M worldwide. That makes it the lowest-grossing of the first five Spider-Man films and had many observers thinking, as Deadline put it, that the “tell-tale signs of franchise fatigue are evident.” Sony agreed, and rebooted the series three years later.

  • ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming,’ 2017

Tom Holland’s debut outing in the spider suit marked the first time in which a Sony Spider-Man film was fully integrated into Disney’s greater Marvel Cinematic Universe. It also took the superhero back to the beginning, with director Jon Watts calling it “a straight up high school movie.” Taking place during his high school’s homecoming weekend, the film sees Spidey facing the perils of being a teenager and the superpowered perils of classic villains The Vulture and The Tinkerer.

If Marisa Tomei’s casting as Aunt May gave the film some zip, Zendaya joining as MJ and Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark playing Peter’s mentor supercharged it. After a dip during the Andrew Garfield years, Homecoming earned very close to Spider-Man 3, which represented the peak of Tobey Maguire’s efforts.

  • ‘Spider-Man: Far From Home,’ 2019

Sony teaming with Disney‘s Marvel to fold Spider-Man into the  Avengers movies reaped great rewards for the Culver City-based studio, with Spider-Man: Far From Home becoming (at the time) Sony’s highest-grossing movie ever with $1.13 billion total. That was good enough for a hefty $339 million in net profit, per Deadline’s reporting.

Jake Gyllenhaal played villain Quentin Beck, with Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury and Cobie Smulders’ Maria Hill paying Peter Parker a visit, as well. Zendaya and Jacob Batalon, who played Peter’s best friend Ned Leeds, also returned.

  • ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home,’ 2021

No Way Home further launched Spider-Man into the multiverse with the help of Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange. That opened doors for the return of Willem Dafoe (as Norman Osborn aka the Green Goblin), Alfred Molina (as Dr. Otto Octavius), Jamie Foxx (as Electro/Max Dillon), Rhys Ifans (as the Lizard) and Thomas Haden Church (as the Sandman). It also meant Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire could return as their incarnations of Spider-Man to help Tom Holland’s Peter Parker do battle with the rogues gallery.

  • ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day,’ 2026

SPIDER-MAN: BRAND NEW DAYSPIDER-MAN: BRAND NEW DAY

The fourth solo Spider-Man installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, stars Tom Holland as the web slinger, but his Peter Parker has been forgotten by the majority of the world, including his closest friends MJ (Zendaya) and Ned (Jacob Batalon). In addition to the stress of that event, Holland’s Peter is undergoing some sort of puberty or metamorphosis with arachnid DNA overwhelming his senses. There is also a mysterious psychic threat on the prowl that he is dealing with.

Audiences loved it: Spider-Man Brand New Day notched the biggest opening ever at the North American box office with a 3-day of $360M, taking down that of Avengers: Endgame in 2019.

Where To Stream It: Nowhere yet. It’s still in theaters.
