Spectrum Cable TV is In Trouble As It Races to Cut $2 Billion in Costs & Change the Company

Spectrum cable is confronting a deepening crisis of subscriber erosion and competitive pressure, prompting parent company Charter Communications to pursue a sweeping overhaul aimed at cutting $2 billion in costs over the next 18 months while attempting a fundamental redesign of how it operates and competes.

In its third-quarter results, Charter reported losing 233,000 internet customers and 77,000 video customers, ending September with 34.3 million internet subscribers. Residential accounts drove nearly all of the internet decline. Video losses, while improved from prior periods in some legacy areas, left the company with roughly 13.8 million video subscribers. These declines come even after the August close of Charter’s acquisition of Cox Communications, which added more than 5 million customer relationships and expanded the company’s footprint into high-growth markets such as Phoenix and Las Vegas.

Reported revenue reached $14.9 billion, up 9.1 percent year over year, largely from the Cox contribution. Yet the company swung to a $2.4 billion net loss, or $20.50 per share, driven in significant part by a $6.3 billion non-cash franchise impairment charge. Pro forma figures excluding the merger impact showed further softness, with revenue and adjusted EBITDA declining. Charter shares fell after the results.

The $2 billion annualized operating-expense savings target sits on top of more than $1 billion in expected synergies from the Cox combination. The bulk of the new savings is expected to come from eliminating projects that do not support internet growth, simplifying organizational structures, increasing spans of control, reducing management layers, and extracting better terms and performance from a narrower set of vendors. As part of the leadership reorganization, Spectrum Chief Commercial Officer Adam Ray and Chief Marketing Officer Sharon Peters are set to depart at the end of the year. Management has stated the reductions are not aimed at frontline service and sales employees.

Charter is framing the effort as a fundamental redesign of how the company competes, allocates resources, and runs the business. The top priority is returning the core internet business to growth through a shifted go-to-market approach, simpler offerings, stronger retention, and continued technology deployment, including AI, to improve service delivery and customer experience. The company also plans to shift certain Cox service calls from offshore centers to its U.S. employee base without adding headcount, seeking faster execution and a sharper culture of urgency. Spectrum products and packaging were launched across the former Cox footprint in mid-September, with management citing early signs of stronger demand and improving trends in those markets.

The overhaul arrives amid intensifying competition. Home 5G services from Verizon and T-Mobile, along with satellite options such as Starlink and Amazon’s planned service, are eroding traditional cable broadband share. Broader industry headwinds, including slower household formation and moves, have compounded the pressure. Peer Comcast has also pursued restructuring charges focused on its cable and internet operations.

Charter positions the combined cost program and operational changes as essential to restoring growth, improving free cash flow over time, and adapting to rising customer expectations around value, speed, and service. Whether the $2 billion savings and redesign can reverse sustained internet customer losses remains the central test for Spectrum in the coming year.
