Contains spoilers for “VisionQuest” Episode 7 — “Immolation”

The seventh episode of Marvel Studios’ Disney+ series “VisionQuest” contains some major revelations about the true origins of Vision, culminating in a scene starring Paul Bettany opposite Paul Bettany and Paul Bettany.

As well as diving deep into Vision’s own mind with the help of some characters from previous Marvel releases, “VisionQuest” has given fans a new look at the backstory of sentient AI in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. From early on there were hints that “VisionQuest” might introduce Marvel Comics’ first synthetic hero as the progenitor of characters like Vision, Ultron, and JARVIS. The second episode featured a reference to Marvel’s original Human Torch – not Johnny Storm of the Fantastic Four, but Jim Hammond, an android with similar powers to the later, better-known Torch. The penultimate episode of “VisionQuest,” “Immolation,” introduces both the Human Torch and his creator, Dr. Phineas Horton, to the MCU.

“Immolation” opens on a flashback featuring Horton, who had been mentioned but not seen until this point. “VisionQuest” had already revealed that other AI characters created by Tony Stark had human avatars based on real people and this scene confirms that Horton himself was the model for Vision’s appearance. A scientist overwhelmed by grief at the loss of his son, Jim, Horton worked tirelessly to create JIM, a synthezoid replacement. Like Vision, JIM was made in Horton’s image, as is revealed when Vision ventures into the depths of his own code and meets his ancestors.

In an attempt to rediscover the soul he lost when he was rebuilt by SWORD, Vision journeys through the layers of his coding in “Immolation.” This quest eventually leads him into a memory of the home of Dr. Phineas Horton. Here, Vision is greeted by Horton himself alongside JIM, who is sporting the red costume of the Human Torch glimpsed in 2011’s “Captain America: The First Avenger.” In a series primarily concerned with strained father-son relationships, whether between Vision and Tommy Maximoff or Ultron and Vision, Horton and JIM fit right in, encapsulating much of Vision’s internal conflict throughout “VisionQuest.”

The projection of Horton encountered by Vision explains that he designed JIM to be free of human emotions, but the synthezoid always yearned for more — to be more human. When JIM eventually found love, it sent his mechanical systems into overdrive, igniting the air around him. The projection of Horton reveals that the original Horton tried to intervene in JIM’s relationship, resulting in an argument in which JIM burned both himself and his creator to death.

As JIM helps Vision unlock his lost feelings, it becomes clear that Vision has been both Horton and JIM — he’s attempted to suppress the emotions of his true self, as Horton attempted to suppress the emotions of his synthetic son, fearing what such feelings would do to him. Only by embracing his pain does Vision overcome Horton’s mistakes and become complete.
