Roku dominates the U.S. streaming media player market, but many users are only scratching the surface of its capabilities. As a longtime Roku enthusiast, I’m excited to share five tips and tricks to elevate your streaming experience.
- Use the New Kid & Teen Mode
Give kids and teens a safer, simpler Roku without handing over the whole device. Kid & Teen Mode lets you choose which installed apps they can open, decide whether they can switch HDMI inputs, and lock the exit behind your Roku PIN. Search, browse, Guest Mode, voice, casting, and Roku Pay purchases are blocked, and Roku turns off its own personalized home-screen ads while the mode is on. Set it up at Settings > Kid & Teen Mode (you’ll need a Roku PIN first). Participating apps include services like Netflix, PBS Kids, and other kids-focused channels, but this does not replace each app’s own parental controls.
- Say Goodbye to Tedious Typing
Tired of using the clunky onscreen keyboard? The Roku mobile app for iOS, Android, and Fire OS lets you use your phone’s keyboard for effortless logins. Just open the app, connect to your Roku device, and tap the keyboard icon when prompted.
- Upgrade Your Remote
Did you know Roku has a rechargable Roku Remote with programable quick launch buttons and a built in backlight? You can find it HERE.
- Travel with Your Roku
Take your entertainment on the go! Roku supports public Wi-Fi networks commonly found in hotels and dorms. Connect to the network, then select “I am at a hotel or college dorm” in the network settings.
- Hide Recommendation Rows on the Home Screen
Tired of scrolling past “For You” and other suggested-content rows just to reach your apps? Open Settings > Home Screen and set Recommendation Rows to Hide. On the newer home screen layout, you can also set Quick Access to Hide so your app grid moves back to the top.
Bonus Tip: Automatic Captions When Muted
Never miss a word, even when the volume is down. Enable “Mute Captions” on your Roku TV to automatically display captions when muted.
Bonus: Airplay
If you have an Apple iOS device, you can cast from your iPhone to Roku TVs and Roku Players using Airplay.
