Roku has officially entered a new chapter, and some viewers may be wondering whether it’s time to take their streaming experience somewhere else.

Fox completed its $22 billion acquisition of Roku on November 6, officially bringing the streaming platform under the ownership of one of America’s largest media companies. The move comes with leadership changes, too, as Roku founder Anthony Wood leaves his CEO role and joins Fox’s board while taking on a new position overseeing its digital businesses.

Fox says Roku will continue operating as an open streaming platform, giving viewers access to thousands of apps and channels. However, some customers may still prefer having another option, particularly those who were already considering an upgrade.

There have also been other changes involving Roku-owned services. For example, Frndly TV recently removed several channels, including recently added local stations and specialty networks.

None of this means Roku devices are suddenly going away or that viewers need to replace their streaming players. Still, the acquisition gives consumers another reason to look at what else is available.

The good news is that leaving Roku doesn’t have to mean spending $150 or more on another streaming box. Walmart, Amazon, Google, and Apple all have options at very different price points.

Here’s what you can buy right now.

12 Streaming Devices That Can Replace Roku

Walmart’s onn Devices: The Budget-Friendly Way to Get Google TV

If your biggest reason for buying a Roku was its affordable price, Walmart’s onn lineup is one of the first places to look.

These devices run Google’s TV platform, giving you access to thousands of streaming apps, Google Assistant or Gemini voice controls, and Google’s content discovery features. You can find many of the same apps available on Roku without spending much on the hardware.

There is another advantage worth considering. Walmart is currently advertising five free Apple offers with qualifying onn streaming device purchases, including up to one month of Apple TV. Eligibility restrictions apply, but it’s a nice extra for anyone interested in trying Apple’s streaming service.

Here are four options worth considering:

onn Full HD Streaming Device – $29.98

Get the onn Full HD Streaming Device at Walmart

This is the entry-level option for anyone who doesn’t need 4K resolution.

The device supports up to 1080p streaming and comes with 8GB of storage, 1.5GB of RAM, and a voice remote with Google Assistant. It plugs into your television through HDMI and gives older TVs access to Google’s streaming platform.

At $29.98, it’s worth considering for a bedroom television, guest room, or older HDTV that doesn’t need an expensive upgrade.

onn 4K Streaming Device (2026) – $39.98

For someone with a 4K television, this is a more sensible starting point.

The 2026 model delivers 4K Ultra HD streaming with 2GB of RAM and 8GB of storage. It also brings Google’s Gemini assistant to an affordable streaming player, making voice searches and finding something to watch easier.

You get the Google TV interface and access to popular streaming apps without paying anywhere near the price of Google’s flagship streaming box.

At $39.98, this is a solid middle ground for anyone who wants to replace an older Roku without spending much.

onn 4K Plus Streaming Device – $49.98

For another $10, Walmart’s 4K Plus gives you more room for apps and games. It includes 16GB of storage and 2GB of RAM, along with 4K streaming, Dolby Vision, and Dolby Atmos support for compatible televisions and home theater equipment.

Wi-Fi 6 support is another welcome addition. You’ll also get Google’s voice controls and the familiar Google TV experience.

If you want a little more storage and better picture and audio format support than the standard onn 4K model, this is worth the extra money.

onn 4K Pro Streaming Device Gen 2 – $59.98

Get the onn 4K Pro Streaming Device Gen 2 at Walmart

This is the most capable option in Walmart’s current lineup, and it’s still considerably cheaper than Google’s own streaming box.

The 2026 second-generation model includes 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage. It supports 4K UHD, Dolby Vision, and Dolby Atmos, along with Wi-Fi 6 and wired Ethernet.

Walmart also includes a remote-finding feature, while Gemini and Matter compatibility give the device additional smart home capabilities.

For $59.98, you’re getting a lot of hardware for the money. It’s worth a look if you want a faster, more feature-packed Google TV experience without paying premium streaming-player prices.

Google TV Streamer: A More Powerful Upgrade

Get the Google TV Streamer on Amazon

If you’re willing to spend more for a dedicated streaming box, Google’s own hardware is another option.

The Google TV Streamer sells for around $149 and takes a different approach from the smaller HDMI sticks.

Google includes 4GB of RAM and 32GB of storage, along with support for 4K HDR, Dolby Vision, HDR10+, and Dolby Atmos. It also has Gigabit Ethernet, which is useful for anyone who prefers a wired internet connection over Wi-Fi.

Google TV brings movies, shows, and recommendations from different streaming apps together on one screen. The platform also supports Gemini for TV, allowing viewers to use Google’s AI assistant to search for content and get answers.

The device doubles as a smart home hub, with Matter and Thread support for compatible devices.

This is a good choice for viewers who already use Google Home, Nest products, or Android devices. However, there’s one thing worth remembering: you’re paying $149 for Google’s hardware rather than a completely different streaming platform.

The less expensive onn devices above also run Google TV. For many households, one of those could provide the experience they’re looking for at a much lower price.

Amazon Fire TV: Several Ways to Leave Roku for Under $110

Amazon has one of the widest selections of streaming devices, with inexpensive HD sticks, 4K players, and a more powerful streaming box. Fire TV is worth considering if you already use Alexa, Echo speakers, Ring cameras, or Amazon’s other smart home products. Its interface also brings Amazon’s streaming content and recommendations front and center.

Here are five devices currently worth a look:

Amazon Fire TV Stick HD – $19.99

Down from $39.99, this is the cheapest option in Amazon’s lineup. It supports Full HD streaming up to 1080p and includes Wi-Fi 6 and an Alexa Voice Remote. It’s a good fit for older televisions, spare TVs, and anyone who doesn’t need 4K.

Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K Select – $21.99

Down from $49.99, the 4K Select is another inexpensive way to upgrade an older television. It supports 4K Ultra HD and HDR10+, giving you higher-resolution streaming without spending much more than the HD model.

For someone who already owns a 4K television, spending just a couple of dollars more than the HD stick makes this an appealing option.

Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K (2026) – $24.99

Down from $59.99, this newer model is one of the more compelling deals in Amazon’s lineup.

It supports 4K streaming, HDR10+, and Wi-Fi 6, along with an updated Fire TV experience and redesigned remote. It also supports direct power through a compatible television’s USB port, helping reduce the number of cables behind your TV.

For less than $25, it’s an inexpensive way to bring Amazon’s streaming platform to another television.

Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K Plus – $39.99

Get the Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K Plus on Amazon

Down from $69.99, the 4K Plus is the better choice for viewers who want more advanced picture and sound support.

It includes Dolby Vision, HDR10+, and Dolby Atmos, along with Wi-Fi 6 and an Alexa Voice Remote with dedicated power and volume buttons.

If you have a compatible television and sound system, those additional formats make this a more capable streaming player than the entry-level models.

Amazon Fire TV Cube – $109.99

Get the Amazon Fire TV Cube on Amazon

Down from $199.99, the Fire TV Cube is Amazon’s premium option.

Unlike the streaming sticks, the Cube sits beside your television and includes an octa-core processor, hands-free Alexa controls, and Wi-Fi 6E support.

You can talk to Alexa from across the room without picking up the remote. It also includes an HDMI input for connecting compatible equipment, such as a cable box or game console.

With 4K Ultra HD, Dolby Vision, and Dolby Atmos support, it’s a good fit for a more advanced home theater setup.

For anyone who wants Alexa to play a larger role in their entertainment system, the Cube offers considerably more functionality than a basic streaming stick.

Apple TV 4K: The Premium Option

Apple TV is another route, but it’s a very different proposition from Walmart’s budget streamers.

Apple’s biggest advantage is how well its devices work together. If you already own an iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, or HomePod, Apple TV can fit naturally into your existing setup.

AirPlay lets you send content from your Apple devices to your television. You also get access to Apple Music, Apple Arcade, FaceTime, and Apple’s smart home features. The interface is another selling point, as Apple TV has a reputation for fast navigation, polished menus, and a less cluttered experience than some competing streaming platforms.

There are two generations worth considering:

Apple TV 4K (3rd Gen) – $199

Get the Apple TV 4K (3rd Gen) at Walmart

The third-generation Apple TV 4K is a solid option for anyone who wants Apple’s streaming experience without paying $299 for the newest model. This version features Apple’s A15 Bionic chip, 4K streaming, Dolby Vision, HDR10+, and Dolby Atmos. It also includes the Siri Remote for voice searches and navigation.

Walmart has advertised five free Apple offers with this device, including up to one month of Apple TV, giving shoppers another reason to consider the older model, although eligibility restrictions apply.

However, the biggest catch is availability. Walmart’s $199 listing has shown out-of-stock status, but it may be available for pickup at a store near you.

Apple TV 4K (4th Gen) – $299

Pre-order the new Apple TV 4K on Amazon

Meanwhile, Apple’s newest streaming box takes things further with Siri AI and a redesigned remote.

The new model includes built-in far-field microphones, meaning you can talk to Siri from across the room without picking up the remote. The upgraded assistant can handle more conversational questions and help viewers discover movies and shows.

Apple also upgraded the hardware with its A19 chip, bringing faster performance and improved graphics over the previous generation.

We recently covered everything new coming with Apple’s latest Apple TV 4K. The new Apple TV 4K is priced at $299 and is available for pre-order ahead of its November 13 release. Apple is also offering three months of Apple TV with qualifying purchases through its own store.

So, Which Roku Alternative Should You Buy?

There isn’t one replacement that makes sense for everyone. It really comes down to how much you want to spend and which features matter most.

If you want to spend as little as possible, Amazon’s Fire TV Stick HD starts at $19.99. The 4K Select is only $21.99, making it a particularly inexpensive way to get 4K streaming.

For viewers who want Google TV without paying $149, Walmart’s onn devices are difficult to overlook. The $39.98 4K model is a good starting point, while the $59.98 4K Pro gives you considerably more storage, memory, and connectivity.

Google’s own $149 streamer makes more sense for someone who wants a dedicated, higher-end box with Ethernet and additional smart home features.

Finally, Apple TV is the premium choice for people already invested in Apple’s ecosystem. The older model can be a good value when available at the right price, while the new $299 version brings the latest Siri AI features.

The Fox acquisition gives Roku a new owner, but it doesn’t mean existing customers have to rush out and buy something else. Roku says its open platform will continue supporting the broader streaming industry.

Still, having options is a good thing. Whether you want to spend $20 or $300, there are plenty of ways to change your streaming setup without going back to cable.
