What’s better than a surprise on Christmas Day? An even better and bigger surprise from Netflix on Stranger Things Day! It’s been almost one year since the streaming service unleashed the fifth and final season of the global phenomenon, which was a three-part event spread across our 2025 holiday season, but we have now learned we’re heading back to other worlds in the show’s universe.
On Nov. 6, the official holiday known as Stranger Things Day in observance of Will Byers going missing in season 1, Netflix made the spinoff announcement fans have been waiting for since the Duffer Brothers first starting teasing a new show. We’re heading even further back in time to a new location in Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure very soon on Netflix.
Stranger Things spinoff Other Worlds coming to Netflix in 2028
Netflix revealed scarce details about Other Worlds aside from confirming that the new live-action prequel series will be released sometime in 2028. The Duffer Brothers teamed up with Kate Trefry, a writer on Stranger Things: The First Shadow and Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen, and Joe Wright will direct the first three episodes, thought he exact episode count is unconfirmed.
While Netflix hasn’t shared an exact synopsis, the streamer revealed that we’re not heading back to Hawkins but to Marion, Nevada and gave some insight on what to expect from the new series: “The series is a prequel set in the 1950s, before Stranger Things and before the stage play Stranger Things: The First Shadow.” Additionally, Netflix released a brief teaser:
In the Other Worlds announcement teaser, fans will recognize some familiar Stranger Things imagery with the bicycle and radio lying on the ground an obvious callback and connection to the original series. The teaser pans beyond the bike and past a warning sign to showcase an ominous cloudy sky. We’re heading to Marion, Nevada on April 19, 1955, where there’s a chilling explosion in the clouds.
The music that plays at the end of the teasing alongside the reveal of the Other Worlds logo is very much in line with the 1950s setting, just as the iconic score for Stranger Things place us firmly in the 1980s. As more details about the new prequel spinoff are announced, we will get a better idea of what the show will look like and how it will be different from (or similar to) the original.
Obviously, there are a number of things that Netflix hasn’t announced about the series just yet, including characters, casting, production dates, and the exact release date. However, the streamer confirmed a release at some point in 2028 and stated that filming will take place in New Mexico. Production will likely kick off next year and take place through much of 2027.
Netflix lifting the veil on Other Worlds is certainly unexpected and an announcement we didn’t see coming, though fans started to pick up on the possibility that something related to Stranger Things could happen on Nov. 6. No one could have imagined that we would receive the spinoff announcement so soon, but the excitement could be higher now that our trip to Marion is set.
Stay tuned for even more Other Worlds news and updates as they’re shared by Netflix!
