EXCLUSIVE: Black Panther, Small Axe and Black Mirror star Letitia Wright is set to star in supernatural horror film In Her Shadow whose producers include Obsession outfit Tea Shop Films.
Ahead of the AFM, Bankside is launching world sales on the project which heralds from Brit writer-director Rowan Athale (Gangs of London). BAFTA winner and Emmy nominee Wright will serve as executive producer via her 3:16 Productions banner.
Currently in pre-production, the synopsis reads: “Receiving a shocking late night phone call from the police, celebrated author Annie Cutter learns that her estranged, recently-deceased sister had kept her young daughter locked up alone in a dark basement for the last five years. Choosing to adopt the little girl, Annie comes to believe there may have been a reason for her sister to be afraid of the child. And that she may have locked her in the basement for her own safety… And the protection of others.”
Pic is produced by Ed Barratt and Richard Wylie of Public Pictures (Wasteland) and Mark Lane of Tea Shop Film, whose credits also include 47 Metres Down, Fall and The Surfer. Stephen Kelliher and Sophie Green of Bankside Films (Talk To Me) also serve as producers. Bankside Films developed the screenplay.
Athale’s 2012 debut feature Wasteland (also known as The Rise), also produced by Barratt, premiered at Toronto and earned him BIFA and London Film Festival nominations. Named a BAFTA Breakthrough Brit, his credits also include Giant, Strange But True, Netflix’s Outside the Wire, The Vault and hit series Gangs of London.
Athale said: “I’m honoured to announce my next film as director will be In Her Shadow, starring the singular talent that is Letitia Wright, one of the foremost actors of her generation. I’m excited to once again collaborate with Mark and James of Tea Shop, Ed and Richard of Public Pictures, and Stephen and Sophie of Bankside Films, who, coming off the back of both Obsession and Talk to Me, are the perfect collaborators to bring this terrifying, propulsive and emotional supernatural horror film to the screen.”
