Adam Driver is speaking out about his role in Michael Mann’s Heat 2 — and sharing an update on how the filmmaker is doing following his accidental shooting over the weekend.
Mann, the 83-year-old director of the sequel to the 1995 crime thriller, was hospitalized Sunday after accidentally shooting himself in the leg at a Los Angeles gun range Saturday.
“On Saturday, at a gun range, a weapon accidentally discharged while holstered resulting in a superficial injury to film director Michael Mann. He was treated and is being released,” a rep for Mann shared in a statement.
While appearing on The Rich Eisen Show Wednesday, Driver shared an update on the four-time Oscar-nominated filmmaker, explaining that he reached out to Mann as soon as he heard about the incident.
“He’s good,” Driver said. “I texted him immediately; he responded, and he was at work the next day.”
“He’s done that same motion 20,000 times; he used to shoot competitively, so I’m not sure exactly what happened,” Driver added.
The incident comes as Mann prepares to film Heat 2, a follow-up to his 1995 crime classic starring Al Pacino, Robert De Niro and the late Val Kilmer. The upcoming film is based on Mann’s 2022 novel of the same name, which serves as both a prequel and sequel to the original.
During the interview, Driver confirmed that he will play Otis Wardell, the film’s main antagonist, in Heat 2. The Hollywood Reporter first reported in October 2025 that Driver was circling the project.
Leonardo DiCaprio, Christian Bale and Stephen Graham have also reportedly joined the cast, while Jerry Bruckheimer and Scott Stuber are producing.
“I love Michael. I loved working with him on Ferrari, but working on this, I’m excited,” Driver said. “The cast is so awesome.”
Driver also praised Mann’s screenplay. “As a script, it’s even more condensed and streamlined [than the novel]. The film is a missile,” he added.
He will begin working on the film next month. Driver said, “I kind of join top of December and we start shooting the top of next year.”
