Saturday Night Live has become an unofficial campaign stop on the road to the Oscars — and a potential Emmy showcase for its hosts.
Obsession breakout Inde Navarrette is now hoping to follow in the footsteps of Melissa McCarthy (Bridesmaids), Brad Pitt (Once Upon a Time), Adam Driver (Marriage Story), Daniel Kaluuya (Judas and the Black Messiah), and Ryan Gosling (Barbie), all of whom received Oscar nominations for acting and Emmy nods for hosting SNL in the same awards cycle. Technically, Pitt’s Emmy bid was for appearing as Anthony Fauci in a pandemic-era “SNL at Home” episode, not for hosting, but that’s a minor quibble.
The venerable late-night sketch program is still attracting industry acclaim and audience attention in its 52nd season, and Navarrette’s Halloween episode was no exception. The Best Actress Oscar contender went viral for her SNL monologue in which she paraphrased her Obsession character’s “No, no, no, don’t do that” quote.
Later, Navarrette broke character by laughing in a “Paw Patrol: Special Victims Unit” sketch while playing a young boy trying to solve a dog’s murder. She also moved audiences in “The Inventor’s Wife” with her intimate portrayal of a lonely widow who mourns the death of her husband.
Awards campaigns can be rigorous and short on levity, but SNL lets contenders embrace their silly side before a national audience. The various sketches put the performers’ full range on display for Oscar voters. And a mere mention of the host’s eligible performance earns a rousing round of applause from the Studio 8H crowd — making it a win for the film’s studio, too.
Navarrette currently has a 67% chance of receiving a Best Actress nomination at the 2027 Oscars for Obsession, putting her in fourth place, according to our experts’ predictions. The category’s top contenders are Julianne Moore (The Debut), Olivia Wilde (The Invite), and Sandra Hüller (Rose).

Navarrette will be eligible at the 2027 Emmys for her SNL role in the Best Comedy Guest Actress category.
Here’s a closer look at the past performers who garnered Emmy bids for appearing on SNL and Oscar nods for their films during the same awards season:
- Melissa McCarthy: SNL on Oct. 1, 2011 (Best Comedy Guest Actress nominee); Bridesmaids (Best Supporting Actress nominee)
- Brad Pitt: SNL on April 25, 2020 (Best Comedy Guest Actor nominee); Once Upon a Time (Best Supporting Actor winner)
- Adam Driver: SNL on Jan. 25, 2020 (Best Comedy Guest Actor nominee); Marriage Story (Best Actor nominee)
- Daniel Kaluuya: SNL on April 3, 2021 (Best Comedy Guest Actor nominee); Judas and the Black Messiah (Best Supporting Actor winner)
- Ryan Gosling: SNL on April 13, 2024 (Best Comedy Guest Actor nominee); Barbie (Best Supporting Actor nominee)
Other recent contenders have been in the discussion for both achievements.
Teyana Taylor hosted earlier this year on Jan. 24, just two days after the 2026 Oscar nominations were announced. The Best Supporting Actress nominee poked fun at her uniquely named character, Perfidia Beverly Hills from One Battle After Another, in a toy commercial in which she proclaimed, “Welcome to the revolution, kids. Now fight them demons.” Alas, Taylor was not submitted for Emmy consideration by NBC.
One year earlier, Chalamet emceed on Jan. 25, which again was two days after the unveiling of the 2025 Oscar noms. He was a Best Actor nominee for taking on the role of Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown, and even sang several of the musician’s songs on the SNL stage, including “Outlaw Blues,” “Three Angels,” and “Tomorrow Is a Long Time.” Chalamet was in Gold Derby’s Top 10 for an Emmy nomination, but didn’t end up making the cut.
Navarrette isn’t the only Oscar contender this calendar year who stopped by Studio 8H to coincide with their film’s release. Gosling (Project Hail Mary) hosted on March 7, Colman Domingo (Michael) emceed on April 11, Matt Damon (The Odyssey) presided on May 9, and Dakota Johnson (Verity) served on Oct. 3.
The 2027 Oscars nominations will be announce Jan. 21 — see the complete awards calendar.
