A planned feature adaptation of Nimona creator ND Stevenson‘s latest work is aiming to make a splash.
Amazon MGM Studios is developing a live-action movie version of Stevenson’s 2025 fantasy novel Scarlet Morning, The Hollywood Reporter has learned. Kate Herron (Loki) is set to direct and produce for her A Bag of Rats banner, and she is penning the script with Kari Granlund.
Also set to produce are Roy Lee for Vertigo Entertainment, Darlene Caamaño Loquet for Oh My Darlin’ Entertainment and Aubrey Davis for A Bag of Rats. Executive producing are Granlund and Vertigo Entertainment’s Jakob Pollack.
Scarlet Morning centers on two orphans who, having grown restless after waiting for years for their parents to return, agree to join a crew of pirates on an adventure to help save the land known as Dickerson’s Sea. HarperCollins imprint Quill Tree Books published the middle grade illustrated novel last year.
Stevenson is the New York Times best-selling author known for the 2015 graphic novel Nimona, which was shortlisted for the National Book Award and later adapted into a Netflix movie that earned an Oscar nomination for best animated feature. He served as creator and showrunner for reboot She-Ra and the Princesses of Power from DreamWorks Animation Television and is the creator of the best-selling Boom! Studios comic book series Lumberjanes.
Herron directed episodes of Apple TV’s Emmy-nominated Margo’s Got Money Troubles and worked on the second season of HBO’s The Last of Us. She is attached to helm the feature adaptation of The Sims that is set up at Amazon MGM and previously directed the first season of Disney+’s Loki. Scarlet Morning marks the first project for A Bag of Rats.
Granlund is a writer whose recent feature work includes You’re Dead Helen for TriStar and producer Sam Raimi, along with action-comedy The Set Up that has Andrea Savage attached to direct. Her previous credits include Lady and the Tramp and Godmothered.
Caamaño Loquet founded Oh My Darlin’ Entertainment, which counts Scarlet Morning as its first feature project. She has served as senior vp at Nickelodeon Movies and collaborated with Lee on Nimona.
Prior to launching A Bag of Rats with Herron, Davis worked at Phil Lord and Chris Miller’s Lord Miller Productions, where she developed and produced such projects as Miller’s Apple TV series The Afterparty.
