Amazon has eliminated roughly 250 positions in its devices and services division, a move that arrived only days after the company released a cluster of new consumer hardware products. The reductions, carried out on Wednesday, primarily affected software development roles within the unit responsible for Kindle e-readers, Echo speakers, Fire tablets, and the Alexa voice platform, according to Reuters.
The company confirmed the staffing changes after an inquiry, describing them as a limited adjustment intended to improve operational efficiency and bring headcount more closely into line with its current product roadmap. Employees learned of the decisions through early-morning text messages and emails, consistent with Amazon’s established practice for such notifications. An internal message from a human-resources vice president in the devices and services group indicated that the cuts followed a thorough review of the unit’s organizational structure.
The timing is notable. In recent weeks, Amazon introduced updated Kindle e-readers and tablet computers. On the same day the job reductions took effect, the company also unveiled a new Alexa-powered alarm clock and a photo frame that incorporates the same voice assistant. The devices unit has spent years expanding its hardware lineup while integrating generative-AI features into Alexa and related products, an effort that has required substantial engineering resources.
The latest reductions follow a separate round of roughly 1,000 job cuts earlier this month in Amazon’s core retail division, which operates the company’s main online store. Together, the two actions represent the most recent in a series of targeted workforce adjustments the company has made as it seeks to control costs while continuing large-scale investments in artificial intelligence, cloud infrastructure, and logistics. Amazon is scheduled to report third-quarter earnings after the market closes on Thursday, an event that will give investors a clearer view of how management is balancing spending priorities against revenue growth.
Industry observers have noted that software-development teams across the technology sector have faced heightened scrutiny as AI coding tools become more capable. Amazon has not publicly linked the devices-unit reductions to those tools, but the concentration of the cuts among software roles has drawn attention in light of the company’s broader push to incorporate advanced AI across its consumer products. The devices and services group remains central to Amazon’s strategy of placing its software and services in homes through affordable hardware, even as the company continues to refine staffing levels around specific product cycles and efficiency targets.
