Asian Pop Grammy fallout: Filipino, Thai, J-pop but no K-pop submissions

The Recording Academy insisted the show must go on for the instantly beleaguered Best Asian Pop Music Performance category. Now, the Grammys look like they’re going to be stuck with a historic winner who is far from the vanguard of Asian music.

In June, the Recording Academy announced the creation of Best Asian Pop Music Performance award, meant to honor excellence in genres “including, but not limited to” K-pop, J-pop, and C-pop. Almost immediately, fans of the genres, especially the extremely online K-pop faction, decried the award, arguing that instead of honoring Asian artists, the new Grammy pigeonholes them, providing a consolation prize from mainstream pop categories. BTS, the biggest K-pop band of them all — and the group considered the prohibitive favorite for the inaugural award — took the side of the fans and announced it would boycott the ceremony.

After conducting “a listening tour,” the Recording Academy decided that it would keep the category for the 2027 awards. When nominations ballots went out earlier this month, it became clear how many A-list K-pop artists also decided to bypass the new category.

None of the four major K-pop companies (HYBE, SM Entertainment, JYP Entertainment and YG Entertainment) submitted projects for consideration in the category, leaving some of the most influential and commercially successful names out of the race, including Le Sserafim, Blackpink, Aespa, Illit, Stray Kids, Cortis, Ateez, and Hearts2Hearts.

That instantly calls the credibility of the new award into question, given those artists’ dominance of the charts, sales, and zeitgeist. What is supposed to be an award representing and celebrating the scope of Asian music will instead offer a dramatically incomplete picture.

Still, the void left by K-pop’s biggest names has created an opportunity for artists who chose to support the new category. Projects such as Bini’s “Unang Kilig,” SB19’s “Visa,” F5ve’s “I Choose You,” KiiiKiii’s “404 (New Era),” Yoasobi’s “Orion,” Babymetal’s “Sunset Kiss,” Fifty-Fifty’s “Starstruck,” and Ive’s “Bang Bang” are among the most notable entries competing for a nomination. For many emerging performers, the category represents an unprecedented platform to increase their international visibility and bring their music to a broader audience. As the Filipino band Bini told Billboard in defense of their submission, they saw the category as “a door opening, not a box closing.”

Such a decision could also become a double-edged sword. Those who receive nominations may find themselves celebrating a landmark achievement while also facing questions about the legitimacy of a category that divides the industry.

Despite the criticism and the absence of several of the industry’s biggest names, the Best Asian Pop Music Performance could ultimately fulfill one of the goals its supporters have highlighted since its creation: broadening the conversation beyond the artists who traditionally dominate international perceptions of Asian pop music. With groups from countries such as the Philippines, Japan, and Thailand having a genuine opportunity to contend, the category could become a platform for discovering acts that rarely receive recognition at major international awards shows. It could also provide emerging and midlevel artists with a level of exposure they might not achieve if they were competing directly against the continent’s largest commercial forces.

Ultimately, the future of the category will depend on its ability to attract participation from the industry’s most influential artists while maintaining its commitment to diversity and representation. If it succeeds in balancing those objectives, Best Asian Pop Music Performance could establish itself as a legitimate platform for celebrating the relevance and diversity of Asian pop music. But the Recording Academy is going to have to earn that goodwill, one Grammy ceremony at a time.

Phase 1 voting closed last week. We’ll see who makes the initial lineup when the Grammy nominations are unveiled on Nov. 16.
