Netflix is dealing with slower growth; at the same time, Wall Street is floating a major idea: the company might try to buy NBCUniversal once Comcast finishes separating the media business into its own publicly traded company, according to Wolfe Research Analyst Peter Supino on the Puck’s The Varsity podcast. An analyst sees the combination as a practical way for Netflix to add year-round live sports and other programming that keeps people subscribed, while Comcast focuses its remaining operations on cable and broadband. For ordinary viewers, this would mean one company controlling a large library of movies and series along with major live events that currently sit on different platforms. This news follows Netflix’s failed attempt to buy Warner Bros. Discovery.
So why would Netflix buy NBCUniversal?
Netflix built its lead by offering on-demand shows and films that people watch on their own schedule. That approach still dominates streaming, yet recent results showed the slowest revenue growth in years. The company also lowered its advertising forecast, and its stock fell about 7 percent. Free services such as YouTube keep taking more time on living-room screens, so a paid subscription feels less essential every day. Occasional big sports events help, and Netflix has added some NFL games, boxing cards, and other one-off events. Those moments drive temporary interest but do not give sports fans a reason to stay signed up week after week. When the games or fights end, cancellation becomes easy.
NBCUniversal brings a different set of assets. It holds one of the largest sports portfolios in the world, with rights that deliver games and events across much of the calendar year. Its Peacock service has emphasized sports and news far more than original scripted series, an area where Netflix already leads. Combining the two could give Netflix a steady reason for subscribers to remain between big releases. The Universal film library, popular franchises, and theme-park business would also expand the company beyond pure streaming. The concept runs opposite to Netflix’s earlier effort to buy Warner Bros. Discovery. In that case the company mainly wanted the streaming service and studio library and was prepared to leave sports and news behind. Investors reacted poorly, and Paramount ultimately won the bidding for the entire company.
Can Netflix Buy NBCUniversal?
Several practical barriers make any deal harder now than it might have been earlier. The Comcast spinoff is designed as a tax-free transaction, which generally requires the new NBCUniversal company to operate independently for roughly a year after the separation finishes. That pushes any sale or merger well into the future. Comcast’s leaders have said the split is meant to let each business focus on its own growth rather than to prepare either side for a sale. Other observers note that NBCUniversal’s film library and intellectual property, while valuable, are widely seen as less powerful than the Warner assets Netflix once pursued. Theme parks generate strong profits but sit outside Netflix’s core model of digital entertainment, and the traditional NBC broadcast network brings regulatory oversight that a pure streamer has never faced. Netflix itself has described its Warner bid as a special opportunity rather than a necessary strategy, and the recent earnings miss plus stock decline leave investors less willing to support another massive acquisition and the integration work that would follow.
The strategic logic remains clear: Netflix needs more consistent reasons for people to keep paying, and NBCUniversal’s sports and live programming could supply them. Yet the same pressures that make the idea attractive—slowing growth, a recent failed mega-deal, and the rules of the pending spinoff—also make the path longer and more uncertain. No agreement exists, and any combination would still face scrutiny from regulators and skepticism from shareholders who have already watched one high-profile bid fall apart. For now the notion stays an analyst’s prediction rather than a firm plan, even as the streaming business keeps evolving around the basic question of what keeps viewers from canceling.
