In the last 25 years, Guy Ritchie has quietly become one of the most important action directors in all of Hollywood, and while many would argue that his golden days are behind him, he continues to deliver new-age classics. Ritchie stumbled this year with his return to theaters for In The Grey, the action thriller starring Henry Cavill and Jake Gyllenhaal that eked out only $28 million at the global box office. Before In The Grey crashed and burned, though, Ritchie found success on Prime Video with the debut of Young Sherlock, the Sherlock Holmes prequel series that’s already been renewed for Season 2. Ritchie has two new shows dominating streaming right now with MobLand and The Gentlemen, but only MobLand has secured another season — the fate of The Gentlemen is still up in the air right now.
Earlier this year, when Guy Ritchie teamed up with Henry Cavill for In The Grey, it wasn’t their first time working together. The duo worked together two years ago on The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare (co-starring Alan Ritchson), but even that wasn’t the first time they collaborated on a feature film. Back in 2015, Ritchie and Cavill worked together on the spoofy James Bond-style spy thriller, The Man From U.N.C.L.E., which grossed only $110 million at the box office against a $75 million budget. 11 years removed from the film’s underwhelming theatrical premiere, The Man From U.N.C.L.E. is easier to watch than ever, as the film has found a home streaming for free on the underrated Roku Channel. The service doesn’t even require a subscription or account to watch great movies and TV shows for free.
What Is ‘The Man From U.N.C.L.E.’ About?
In addition to Henry Cavill, The Man From U.N.C.L.E. also stars Alicia Vikander, Elizabeth Debicki, and Hugh Grant. The film is based on the popular TV series by Sam Rolfe, and while Ritchie did work on the script, he did so with help from Lionel Wigram, Jeff Kleeman, and David C. Wilson. The official synopsis for the film, which earned scores of 68% from critics and 73% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, reads as follows:
“At the height of the Cold War, a mysterious criminal organization plans to use nuclear weapons and technology to upset the fragile balance of power between the United States and Soviet Union. CIA agent Napoleon Solo (Henry Cavill) and KGB agent Illya Kuryakin (Armie Hammer) are forced to put aside their hostilities and work together to stop the evildoers in their tracks. The duo’s only lead is the daughter of a missing German scientist, whom they must find soon to prevent a global catastrophe.”
