Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts has been diagnosed with a deep vein thrombosis and bilateral pulmonary emboli, which means he has blood clots in his lungs and in one of his deep veins.
The 28-year-old athlete was originally diagnosed with what was called a more superficial clot, however, things progressed and the team has announced he is now out for the season.
He is being put on blood thinners.

Read the Statement on Jalen Hurts’ Condition
Over the last few days, Jalen Hurts has received comprehensive medical evaluations by physician experts. In the interest of transparency, we are providing additional information on the diagnosis and treatment plan related to his condition.
Jalen was initially diagnosed by specialists in London with a left calf superficial vein thrombosis. After further testing and monitoring, the current diagnosis is a deep vein thrombosis, as well as bilateral pulmonary emboli. He is clinically stable and has no significant functional limitations. His treatment should only involve anticoagulation [i.e. ‘blood thinners]. During this time, he will not be allowed to participate in any contact activities, including football.
Jalen’s prognosis is very good, and we expect a full recovery. We anticipate that he will have the opportunity to resume contact football activities when off the blood thinners. In the meantime, he will remain active around the team and continue to condition. More importantly, we anticipate that he will have no long-term effects.
We are thinking of Jalen and looking forward to a strong recovery. – via Instagram.

Members of the Media Are Calling Out the Philadelphia Eagles
After being diagnosed with the superficial clot, Jalen did play in an NFL game in London, England.
“How committed is Jalen Hurts to football? After initially being diagnosed with a superficial blood clot in London, doctors told him not to sleep as a precaution, so he had been awake for roughly 36 hours when he started against the Jaguars, throwing for 220 yards and a TD,” NFL insider Tom Pelissero posted on X.
Now, members of the media are picking this story up, and calling out the organization for allowing a player to play with a blood clot, but being okay with him not sleeping.
“Jalen Hurts was overseas, under-rested and dealing with a blood clot while playing without key offensive weapons at his disposal and ran the ball only twice (maybe as a way of self-preservation knowing what he was dealing with). Just one question: Why?,” NFL insider Mike Garafolo posted.
SportsCenter‘s Linda Cohn posted, “That entire Eagles medical staff should be fired! He should not have been allowed to board that plane to London! He was complaining about the calf pain and they did nothing! And why did they wait to get to London before taking the first ultrasound!!?!?”
