Netflix Survived the ‘GTA VI’ Premiere (Mostly)

The 4,727-day wait is officially over. Today, Rockstar Games and Netflix teamed up to break the internet, dropping a massive 26-minute gameplay deep dive into the world of Grand Theft Auto VI.

If you were one of the millions of gamers who tuned in right at 3:00 PM ET, you might have experienced a brief two-to-five-minute hiccup on Netflix’s desktop site as servers adjusted to the unprecedented traffic (the website was showing the Is It Cake “Something Went Wrong” error message sitewide for a few refreshes until everything sprung into action). However, fans watching via the Netflix TV and mobile apps got a (mostly) flawless, buffer-free premiere; the compression left a bit to be desired, but I digress.

Downdetector suggested a spike in problems five minutes ahead of release and for a few minutes after.

I also jumped over to my ad-supported Netflix account just to see what ads were being served up. PlayStation was the big one, featuring a clip of GTA VI among many other titles plus another video game ad. Another profile got a Lenor fabric softener one so it’s not quite as targeted as I thought it might be across the board.

And what a premiere it was. After years of rumors, teaser trailers, and unfortunate leaks, Rockstar has finally pulled back the curtain on Vice City, and it was a tour de force.

Here is a complete breakdown of everything shown during the GTA VI: An Extended Look presentation, from new combat mechanics to a surprising morality system, and what it means for the game’s newly confirmed November 19 release date.

A Bonnie & Clyde Story (With a Morality System?)

The presentation immediately set the tone, introducing us to our dual protagonists, Jason and Lucia, as they approach an apartment building looking for a contact named “Boobie.”

Right off the bat, Rockstar showed off what appears to be a brand-new mechanic: an honor or morality system. While walking through the complex, Jason stops to pet a dog, triggering an “angel” icon on the screen. It seems your random acts of kindness (or cruelty) will be tracked in Vice City.

Naturally, the drug deal they are attempting to pull off goes horribly wrong. The ensuing shootout showcases Jason and Lucia seamlessly fighting side-by-side using pistols and shotguns as a police raid swarms the building. They narrowly escape via an elevator—where Lucia drops a tantalizing lore question: “Was that Menendez?”—before the iconic GTA VI logo splashes across the screen.

Beyond the chaos, the footage also highlighted the quiet intimacy of their relationship. A later scene shows Jason checking the fridge while waiting for Lucia to get dressed for a party. When she finally steps out, his reaction—“Damn, worth the wait”—felt like a cheeky nod to the fans watching at home.

Welcome Back to Vice City

Following the intro, Netflix viewers were treated to several jaw-dropping montages of the State of Leonida. If you read the exclusive deep dive published by Dazed yesterday, you already knew the world was unparalleled, but seeing it in motion (and not through crappy leaks) is another story entirely.

The scope of side activities is staggering. The footage showed the duo driving fan boats through swamps, scuba diving, racing, hitting up strip clubs, and even crossing paths with in-game livestreamers and random “Vice City weirdos.” We also got a look at a major supporting character. When Jason and Lucia finally arrive at their party, they meet a character named Brian, who appears to be voiced by and modeled after Stephen Root.

Rockstar isn’t shying away from its history. One of the most exciting moments of the presentation was a full look at Jason and Lucia robbing a diner, which strongly resembles the exact same scenario from the infamous 2022 alpha build leaks—only now, it looks incredibly polished, tense, and fully realized.

The finale of the video gave us a taste of high-stakes combat during a nighttime security gig at a high-end party. The nighttime lighting and reflections were photorealistic, but the gunplay stole the show. Jason was even shown utilizing a slow-motion ability (welcome back, Max Payne 3) while Lucia engaged in a brutal, desperate hand-to-hand brawl in a stairwell to steal an attacker’s gun.

Perhaps the biggest flex of the entire 26-minute video was the final title card, which confirmed that all of this jaw-dropping footage was captured on a base PlayStation 5.

Motion blur looks strong on the game, although it’s unclear whether Netflix compression has some part to blame here but otherwise, a very strong showcase for the most valuable entertainment property in history. The UI also looks incredibly basic, with the other visuals on screen doing the talking. That’s not to mention many licensed songs featured throughout, including Def Leppard and Let Your Love Flow by The Bellamy Brothers.

And to put all rumors to rest, the video ended with a firm confirmation: the game is not delayed. It will officially launch globally on November 19.

It’s unclear how Netflix will classify this and whether it’ll get into the daily top 10 charts (some formats on Netflix are not eligible, like podcasts), but if it is eligible, we might get some viewership numbers in the movie chart next Tuesday. We’ll keep you posted.
