Fire Country’s Crossover With Sheriff Country Explained By Morena Baccarin

CBS

Edgewater’s finest united on Friday for a two-part crossover between CBS’ “Fire Country” and “Sheriff Country,” during which a group of escaped convicts terrorized the town against the backdrop of a deadly blaze.

This marks the second time the franchise has staged a full-scale crossover event, and according to “Sheriff Country” star Morena Baccarin, it’s the superior of the two.

“We did it at a better time this year than last year,” Baccarin tells TVLine. “It was a little bit earlier in the season before we’ve all gotten exhausted, and also ‘Fire Country’ hadn’t quite started yet [during the last crossover]. So it was great to be able to have the flexibility, not to mention the weather in Vancouver was amazing. It’s fun to get us all together. There’s something great about seeing the two departments solving crimes and fighting fires together. It really solidifies the world for fans and for us.”

And solidify it did, reuniting fan-favorite pairings like Boone and Bode, while establishing new bridges between unexpected characters. Read on for TVLine’s interview with Baccarin about some of the crossover’s more curious developments:

Is there really a ‘possibility’ for a future between Mickey and Manny?

When Mickey first encounters “Fire Country” favorite Manny in the crossover, the tension is immediate. As we learn, Sharon once set them up on a blind date, which Manny affectionately refers to as the “date from hell.” It makes for some nice levity in the midst of a town-wide emergency, but as the stakes rise, the two are forced to work together — and work out their differences. Morena Baccarin tells TVLine that she had a “great” experience acting opposite Kevin Alejandro, who previously directed an episode of “Sheriff Country” last season.

“I had worked with him before, but it was really fun to uncover a different kind of relationship,” Baccarin says. “They started off at odds, not really getting each other, and then through this epic adventure they go on, they really learn a lot about each other. They become vulnerable, and you see the possibility of two people who could maybe have a go at it. It’s just bad timing. It was bad timing then, and it’s perhaps bad timing now, but you never know.”

You never know, indeed! By the end of the crossover, Manny and Mickey have fully made amends. What he perceived as Mickey being a “control freak” was merely her response to life; Manny spent their date bragging about his Olympian daughter, while Mickey was busy looking at rehab facilities for Skye, which made her feel like a failure. The episode ends with Mickey bidding on Manny at a firefighter charity auction, making us wonder if there might be a future for these two just yet — you know, if things should fizzle out between Manny and Camille.

“I don’t know, we’d have to see where the stories all go,” Baccarin says with a shrug. “Sometimes in life, it’s nice to not wrap something up with a bow, but just to see what could have been. The possibility just kind of lays there between them.”

Skye and Tex’s relationship will test Mickey’s trust in her daughter

At the top of the crossover, Mickey shares new concerns about Skye, who seems somewhat adrift as of late. Well, there’s nothing like a crisis to reveal one’s true purpose, and we think Skye may have found hers in law enforcement. Not only does she handle herself well — or as well as could be expected — during a hostage crisis at the diner, but she also helps the authorities decode messages being sent between the escaped convicts.

As much as Mickey wants her daughter to thrive, Morena Baccarin says she hopes that Skye’s future doesn’t involve fighting crime, telling TVLine, “Somebody needs to have a regular life for all of us out there!”

And then there’s Tex, who takes several opportunities to flirt with Skye (and vice versa!) throughout the crossover. But does Baccarin foresee Mickey giving her approval for them to date? Her answer might surprise you:

“It’s complicated for Mickey, but I feel like she’s got to give her daughter a shot to be her own person and make her her life choices,” the actress says. “Skye has shown that she’s recovering, she’s doing well, and she’s trustworthy. As much as I’m sure Mickey would like her daughter to not be dating a convict, at least it’s a convict who’s trying to make amends, you know, trying to do better.”

Ben McKenzie returns to Sheriff Country this season, and ‘things are about to get complicated’

We’ve been eager to see more of Ben McKenzie’s Sheriff Jim Wade ever since he was introduced in the Season 2 premiere, and it sounds like we have a lot to look forward to — even if we’ll have to be patient.

“He’s going to do three, if not four, episodes,” Morena Baccarin tells TVLine. “There will be quite a bit for their characters. And I love that they made them very connected. They’ve known each other since the academy, he turns out to be Skye’s godfather, and he’s somebody that Mickey has had in her life for a long time. He was sort of like a north star, but I think things are going to get complicated. I haven’t read those episodes yet, but I think things are about to happen.”

As for how Baccarin managed to wrangle the role for her real-life husband, she tells us, “He misses me. I’ve been in Toronto a lot, so he’s like, ‘If this is how I get to see you, I guess I’ll be on your show.'”
