As a fashion editor, I probably own more fall shoes than any one person actually needs. Yet somehow, I still end up wearing the same boots with practically every outfit . . . and it’s starting to get a little boring. This season, I’m breaking the habit with classy Mary Jane flats, a shoe style that feels equal parts feminine, sophisticated and surprisingly versatile.

Whether you’re dressing up jeans for dinner or heading into the office, there’s a pair for practically every occasion. My Amazon favorites include velvet Mary Janes, cushioned Dr. Scholl’s flats and ballet-inspired Adidas sneakerinas that I’ve personally tried and love. I rounded up 13 expensive-looking options that start at only $21, and they’re making it awfully hard to justify another pair of boots.

13 Expensive-Looking Mary Janes I’m Ditching Fall Boots For

1. My Favorite: Who needs another pair of fall boots when these burgundy velvet Mary Janes look this sophisticated? Despite being only $22, the flats bring a pretty pop of color and texture to everyday jeans for an elevated twist. I also adore the square toe and dainty buckle that make them polished enough for holiday dresses.

2. Burgundy Meets Ballerina: Leave it to Adidas to make the Mary Jane style feel sporty and feminine at the same time. I’ve personally worn these burgundy beauties, and the ballet-inspired silhouette, elastic straps and signature cream stripes make them such a fun alternative to traditional sneakers. They’re especially cute with wide-leg jeans and a cozy knit top for casual fall days.

3. Celeb-Approved: When Katie Holmes wears a shoe trend, I pay attention! These Franco Sarto Mary Janes bring a little sparkle to fall dressing with a metallic silver finish, sleek square toe and delicate buckle strap. Since they’re priced at $40, the flats are an easy way to recreate the actress’ polished style without splurging.

4. Woven Wonders: Who says fall shoes have to be leather or suede? These chocolate brown Mary Janes switch things up with an intricate woven texture, dainty buckle strap and pretty gold-tone hardware. They’re especially chic with cream trousers and a warm sweater for those early fall days when boots feel too heavy.

5. Bow-Tied Beauty: Forget the oversized bows that seem to be everywhere lately — these Mary Janes take a much more understated approach. Their skinny, bow-tied straps add a delicate finishing touch to the smooth black uppers, while the square toes give them a sophisticated edge. They’re a pretty way to embrace feminine fall fashion without going overboard.

I have expensive taste when it comes to my wardrobe, and my sweater collection is no exception. I’m always drawn to the kind of elevated knitwear you’d find hanging in a designer boutique, but I don’t love the triple-digit price tags that usually come with it. Luckily, I’ve learned the secret to looking expensive isn’t […]

6. All Day Comfort: Long days of walking call for a shoe that’s more supportive than your average ballet flat. These Dr. Scholl’s Mary Janes come equipped with cushioned footbeds, arch support and adjustable straps, and that’s all without the bulky appearance of traditional comfort shoes. The warm brown color is especially pretty with fall’s cream, olive and chocolate tones.

7. Buckle Up: A little hardware can completely change the personality of a shoe, and these burgundy Mary Janes are proof. The oversized silver buckles and eyelet-studded straps give the shiny, pointed-toe silhouette a rebellious twist that feels surprisingly sophisticated. This $21 style is an affordable way to experiment with fall’s moodier fashion trends.

8. Suede Sophistication: Suede is practically synonymous with fall, but I’m ready to wear it beyond my usual boot and handbag collection. These caramel brown flats bring the rich-looking texture to a feminine silhouette, complete with double buckle straps and a flattering square toe. I’d wear them with cream trousers and a chocolate brown sweater for a cozy, tonal look.

9. Luxe Lace: Who says delicate lace is only for spring and summer? These ivory Mary Janes bring a romantic touch to fall dressing with a sheer floral lace, dainty bow straps and ballerina-inspired silhouette. Pair them with dark-wash jeans and an oversized cardigan for a pretty contrast between soft and cozy.

10. On the Go: These are the kind of shoes I would pack for a fall weekend getaway when suitcase space is precious. The lightweight, foldable construction and cushioned footbeds make these breathable knit flats a practical choice for exploring a new city. The double-buckle straps give them a little more personality than traditional travel shoes, too.

11. Glossy Girl: I’m starting to think patent-style shoes are the easiest way to make fall outfits feel a little more expensive. These shiny burgundy flats feature a beautiful lacquered finish and two skinny, adjustable buckle straps that add a delicate touch while keeping feet securely in place. They’re especially pretty with dark-wash denim and a long wool coat.

12. Lace Up Love: If ballet flats and sneakers had a baby, I’m pretty sure they’d look something like this! The faux suede lace-up flats combine a delicate, low-profile silhouette with adjustable ties that add a charming touch to an already cute shoe. Thee soft tan color is especially pretty with cream sweaters, olive trousers and dark denim.

13. Sweater Weather: If you’re spending the day on your feet, the last thing you want are stiff, unforgiving footwear. These chocolate brown flats feature breathable knit uppers, cushioned insoles and adjustable straps that seal the deal. The ribbed texture adds a little extra interest to an otherwise classic silhouette.
