The friendly neighborhood Spider-Man has swung Sony Pictures Entertainment (SPE) to a massive hike in second quarter profit.
The box office success of Spider-Man: Brand New Day was the main reason SPE posted earnings of $581 million for the three months to September 30, a huge 527% swing on the $93 million posted in the period last year on a dollar basis.
Adjusted operating income before depreciation and amortization was also up to $670.4 million from $183 million in 2025. Revenues came in at $3.2 billion, up 37% on last year, with theatrical sales growing significantly, largely thanks to SPE’s web-handed super hero.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day released at the end of July and posted historic North American box office numbers, surpassing Avengers: Endgame‘s three-day record. That set in motion a tidal wave of huge numbers that have propelled SPE to its huge Q2 figures today, and it is now the third-highest grossing movie in history.
In August, the movie became the highest-grossing Hollywood movie of all time in India, as it became the second-fastest film in pass $1 billion at the international box office, trailing only Avengers: Endgame. It was already the second-fastest to hit $1 billion at the global box office, and set a bunch of other records.
This time last year, SPE generated $2.3 billion in revenues on $93 million in profit, which was a 25% dip on the previous year.
Overall, media and electronics giant Sony posted Q2 2026 group revenues of $3.43 trillion ($21.5 billion), up 10%, with operating income coming in at 622.3 billion yen ($3.9 billion), which is an increase of 45%. The yen to dollar exchange rate conversion was 159 yen to $1.
Sony CFO Lin Tao said the SPE numbers equated to “record high operating income for the second quarter.”
“We believe that this strong performance was achieved through the symbiotic combination of stable growth in our distribution platforms, including PlayStation Network and Crunchyroll, and hit content driven by our strong IP and creative talent, such as Spider-Man, Wolverine and Ella Langley,” she added.
Sony will be anticipating more financial gains in coming weeks with Grand Theft Auto 6 set to release on Sony PlayStation 5 and the Xbox. The game is among the most-eagerly awaited in history, with fans holding on for a full 13 years from the previous instalment.
