Denzel Washington’s Sci-Fi Crime Thriller ‘Déjà Vu’ Is ‘Minority Report’ Meets ‘Looper’

If you’re in the mood for a fast-paced action thriller that goes in a surprising speculative direction, then you need to jump over to Tubi for one of Denzel Washington‘s greatest on-screen exploits. Currently free to stream on the platform is Déjà Vu, a post-9/11, post-Hurricane Katrina thriller that speaks to nationwide fears at the time, infusing them with a sci-fi twist that elevates the film to be more than just your average action flick. If it’s been a few years, now is the perfect time to revisit the picture, as November marks the 20th anniversary of this Tony Scott-directed classic.

‘Déjà Vu’ Pushes Denzel Washington to His Limits With a Philosophically-Rich Moral Dilemma

Like most of his features, Déjà Vu boasts Scott’s signature style of kinetic energy and hyper-focused characters, as ATF agent Doug Carlin (Washington) struggles to catch a domestic terrorist, Carroll Oerstadt (Jim Caviezel), a self-appointed “patriot” who bombed a New Orleans ferry containing U.S. Navy sailors and their families. Soon after the attack, FBI agent Paul Pryzwarra (Val Kilmer) brings Carlin aboard his specialized task force centered around a secret government project that may help catch the killer. As it turns out, scientists have accidentally created a window in time—a window that offers Carlin the chance to stop the tragedy before it occurs. The only problem is that they can only look back just over four days, and those days pass by in real time with no ability to rewind. With little else to do but study the life of victim Claire Kuchever (Paula Patton), Carlin comes to recognize both the killer and his role in stopping him.

Déjà Vu is one of those action-thrillers that has you on the edge of your seat the entire time. Although the worst of it has already happened, the film treads in reverse as it attempts to put all the pieces together, intelligently weaving a narrative where the past and present intersect. This, naturally, leads to some interesting philosophical, as well as theological, conundrums, as Carlin and the team debate the ethics of such government surveillance (after the conspiratorial Enemy of the State, but before The Dark Knight did the same) and the moral uncertainty that arises from operating a window into the past: If God allows such a window to exist, is it not so that Carlin and company can then use it to not just solve a murder, but perhaps prevent one? These are the questions that anchor Déjà Vu, presenting the audience with some complex choices as time rapidly slips through the hourglass and the window into the recent past moves closer to the present tragedy.

10 Intense Thriller Shows That Are Worth Watching Over and Over, Ranked

Second watches are for catching everything you were too stressed to notice the first time.

Denzel Washington and Tony Scott Are at Their Collaborative Best

Of all five collaborations between Washington and Scott, Déjà Vu is perhaps the most creatively engaging. (Yes, that’s even considering the truly remarkable Man on Fire.) The 2006 thriller uses Scott’s distinct visual style to go beyond the simple action thriller, bending genre and making way-out speculative concepts palatable for standard action audiences. At the same time, Washington toes the line between romance and duty as he begins to fall for the woman who, in his timeline, is already dead. It’s a brilliant concept with impeccable execution that goes beyond the pair’s usual brand of grounded, fast-paced thrillers.

As such, Déjà Vu offers the viewer plenty of thrills, chills, and philosophical pondering, and pits them against a ticking clock that screams “already, but not yet.” It’s an exceptional film that perfectly encapsulates the anxieties of early 2000s America while not grounding itself in them so deeply that it feels outdated or outpaced. Indeed, it’s the type of film that they don’t seem to make anymore—a mid-budget thriller with a stacked cast and great thematic potential—and that’s a real shame. Tony Scott was a visionary filmmaker who never let genre (or anything, really) constrain his vision, and with Denzel Washington in the leading role, Déjà Vu is still just as great today as it was 20 years ago.

Déjà Vu is available for streaming on Tubi.
