Comcast Has Started Massive Layoffs Ahead of Its Plans to Break The Company Apart

Comcast has begun implementing a major round of layoffs across its cable, broadband, and wireless operations as part of a broad restructuring ahead of the planned spin-off of its NBCUniversal businesses.

A company spokesperson confirmed to Cord Cutters News that the reductions are now underway. The firm described the effort as a fundamental redesign of its organization intended to create a more agile company better positioned to serve customers, accelerate innovation, and compete more effectively amid rapid industry shifts. Company representatives expressed appreciation for the contributions of affected colleagues. This comes as Comcast is moving forward with plans to break the company apart by spinning NBCUniversal off into its own company.

In a statement to Cord Cutters News a Comcast spokesperson said: “Comcast is fundamentally redesigning our organization to build a more agile company and better serve our customers. These changes will help us accelerate innovation and compete more effectively in a rapidly changing industry. We are deeply grateful to the colleagues whose roles are affected and for the contributions they have made to Comcast.”

The moves follow earlier indications that significant workforce reductions would hit the cable and internet side of the business. Those plans, outlined in connection with third-quarter results, included an anticipated restructuring charge exceeding $1 billion in the fourth quarter of 2026. The charge is tied to transformation steps that include severance, benefits continuation, and related costs as the company prepares the remaining connectivity-focused entity for independent operation after the NBCUniversal and Sky separation, expected to be completed in mid-2027.

State filings and local reports provide the first concrete numbers. In Washington, Comcast has notified regulators of plans to permanently eliminate 159 positions. The cuts affect remote workers and employees at multiple regional offices, including locations in Bellingham, Bremerton, Everett, Olympia, Puyallup, Redmond, Seattle, Spokane, and Vancouver. Affected staff have received or will receive the required advance notice, with separations scheduled to begin around the end of the year and some continuing into early 2027 to support business continuity. The company has indicated the reductions are not the result of work being relocated or shifted to contractors, and it plans to assist impacted employees in seeking other roles internally while providing severance where transitions do not occur.

Larger reductions have been detailed in the company’s home market. Notices filed in Pennsylvania and New Jersey show plans to eliminate 634 positions at Philadelphia headquarters buildings and 119 more across New Jersey counties. Employees in the Philadelphia area have already begun receiving layoff notices, with effective dates clustered at year-end or early in the new year. Across these locations and Washington, the initial wave of documented cuts approaches 1,000 positions, and additional reductions are expected in other markets as individual teams complete their assessments.

The restructuring occurs against a backdrop of ongoing subscriber pressure. Comcast has reported continued losses in residential broadband and video customers as consumers shift toward streaming and as competing internet providers intensify price competition. Executives have framed the changes as a way to simplify the organizational structure, reduce layers, expand the use of artificial intelligence tools in customer interactions, and free resources for growth areas such as wireless and enterprise services once the media assets are separated. The remaining company is expected to operate under the Xfinity brand with a leaner cost base.

Comcast has also stated that it intends to create more than 1,100 new positions nationwide as part of the reorganization, including hundreds in the Philadelphia area, and that it will work with affected employees on potential internal placements. The company has not released a complete national total for the current round of reductions or identified every location where cuts will occur, stating that the final scope is still being determined by individual teams. The process marks one of the most significant operating and cost transformations in the company’s recent history as it positions its core connectivity business for the post-spin-off period.
